I heard in interviews the Captain in this series is taking a secondary role. The lead role is actually "Number One" second in command. They were trying to go back to the days of Majel Barrett's character in the Star Trek original series pilot.

Don't need a Picard, Every thing CBS has said indicates this is Pre-TOS So having a Commander with broken English is acceptable.

How so? I mean, the series is still meant for an english-speaking audience. I can't see how any actor can carry drama long enough for a TV series without sufficient command of the language.

Well First Sol You have to remember who it is we are Talking about. Michelle Yeoh is not just a Chinese Actress, She is in Fact Tri-Lingual, She Grew up in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia The Daughter of English speakers. She was speaking English and Malay before Chinese. She Studied at the Royal Academy in London, In fact She is not Literate in Written Chinese.

Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek? Does not compute...

Has her english improved so much that she can now take a dramatic role? Or is she going to be kungfu-ing klingons most of the time?

Joking aside, I hope casting her as a lead means Star Trek will be exploring Chinese or Asian influence in the Federation. (Hopefully NOT in a Chakotay way.)

Don't need a Picard, Every thing CBS has said indicates this is Pre-TOS So having a Commander with broken English is acceptable.

I always have the impression that she speaks fluent English with a slight British accent...

Interesting, that wasn't the impression I got from Tomorrow Never Dies...

Guys, Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian citizen. She was a former Miss Malaysia during the 80's. She went to Hong Kong and then the Mainland so that she could develop her acting career.

For all her achievements she was conferred a "Datuk'ship" by her home state (one of the 13 states of Malaysia), carrying the title of "Datuk" (more or less an "OBE"? of the UK).

So, when she's back home in Malaysia (however rarely), she would be addressed as "Datuk" Michelle Yeoh by the people and press there.

Cheers :)

I think having Michelle Yeoh playing Number One will be interesting. She is an experience actress and she can play a mature Star Fleet officer who can give the audience the character's perspective in a more protagonist role.

She has been moving to more Dramatic and voice roles and her projects for the last few years have been more US and television based. I mean You can't play the Queen of action stunts forever, Even Jackie Chan has cutting back his stunt work in favor or less destructive roles.
