oh for the love of.... Slavery and Extreme Inequality. It's a Utopian vision to a degree yes but really we only see parts of it. And historically as technology has evolved so to has the standard of living. the poor today have it much better off then those of a century ago.
I really hate it when people get the wrong idea behind trek.
I usually like Krugman's work in the real world. But Star Trek is just too vague for me to piece together an economy based solely on the shows and movies. Also what services is Krugman talking about specifically?

I figured people on Earth have all the basics and they then fell into a very DIY(Do It Yourself) culture that services like food, fire and police can be covered through volunteers. Picard's brother made wine I imagine for his own consumption and any leftover were gifts. Sisco's father cooked in his own restaurant and I don't he collected any compensation other than good yelp reviews. I also think there has to be an apprenticeship system everyone starts at the bottom and works their way up that should fill the less desirable services the way police and restaurant kitchens usually do.

There was something of commerce in the later treks earlier trek in the Kirk era was however a more traditional form of economic activity. And I doubt that Quark serves star fleet and civilians for charity.
But really once the Replicator came in 75% of material needs became served and even before that if. Right now the only real reason why we have people suffering starvation and poverty is that the effective food and materials production is on one side of the earth well the need is on another. If by the 24th century you had a efficient logistical system capable of transporting fresh food in mass from where it is grown to where it is needed with only a small cost of fuel and infrastructure you will solve 90% of the problems and maybe create a high universal standard of living. Its not socialism its that the means of getting resources have evolved to the point where a man in Boston can order take out from a restaurant in Hong Kong and get his new steaming hot in 30 minutes or less.

Just saw the new Star Wars trailer on ESPN. Absolutely awesome! Can't wait to watch the whole movie!

One frustration. Mark Hamil is still nowhere to be found! He is not on the latest poster and not in the trailer! Weird! His only possible appearance would be the hooded figure extending his hand to touch R2D2. I am getting warmer to the idea that Luke turned to the dark side. Not a bad idea. Would be too shocking. Don't know... Don't know what to think...

I can only guess by the trailer that Jedi maybe something more of a myth or legend at this point and Luke Skywalker being possibly the last Jedi won't be revealed until the last half, maybe the very end, of the movie hence why no Luke Skywalker on the poster or the trailer. Only a few people know Luke has become a Jedi who have been wiped out since the Clone Wars.

Luke Skywalker basically lived the life like his previous predecessor Yoda, in almost complete isolation and by himself. That's why the Jedi became like a myth because Anakin Skywalker basically took out their entire Jedi school and protege. There was hardly any one left to teach.

And I am thinking that the one Storm Trooper, who goes over to the resistance and meets Solo, maybe gets sent to Luke to be trained by him so that he can fight the new Dark side warrior..

Also, there are rumors that Solo may get killed by the Dark warrior while that is going on and before the new guy can get trained.

We shall see...but it is going to be huge and we are planning to see it either the 2nd or probably the third week (first of the year) after the crowds thin out.

Yoda went into hiding because the Empire was at the height of its power and was hunting down Jedis. However, in the latest movie, the empire had been largely gone with both Darth Vader and the Emperor gone as well. There is no need for the Jedi to hide. Luke should now dedicate his time finding as many kids with force as possible and start training as soon as possible.

From a story-telling perspective, that's a great way to raise the stakes. However, I can't see the average Star Wars fan getting to excited about this prospect. Might end up like the "Mandarin-Twist" from Ironman 3 for most hardcore fans.

p.s. I think it also depends on how much time Harrison Ford is willing to commit to the franchise. If he is signed up for just one movie, this is definitely a possibility.
