I think it has to do with genetics too, ie relative length of limbs to the torso, ratio in lengths between different parts of limbs, and the composition of muscular fiber types. In case of swimming, increased access to pools as well as popularity definitely unlocked Chinese potential in that field, but I think Chinese should continue to do well in weightlifting. At the gym I used to go to, frequently used to see stick-thin Chinese kids squatting over 300 lbs and deadlifting close to 500 lbs. And these kids aren't even weightlifters!

More interesting sports to keep an eye on as living standards increase and urbanization continues is how long dominance in diving can last and the trajectory off the gymnastics teams.

Don’t forget the wind tunnel testing from AVIC that helped the athletes improve their form and reduce drag.

I was surprised Chinese world no 1 mixed doubles pair lost to koreans. Haven't followed badminton that much since LCW and LD retired, Koreans improved alot.

Also China men's basketball team isnt doing well in FIBA world cup. I'm not sure if Yao Ming is doing a good job as president.

Aaand, this breaks India's only world record (which was earned by a very Asian non Indian looking lady named Chanu). Chanu is injured but had to weigh in for Olympic qualification so she did not lift but watched Jiang take her world record from back stage. Last time Hou Zhihui beat the Indian (overall; she's only good at the clean and jerk and could never actually win against China in the total), India started rumors Hou was busted for drug use, which was of course, another Indian lie they made to comfort the Indian fans. Let's see what they got this time.

Shi Zhiyong is coming back from injury and lifting as a C group athlete (his reported total is very low but he can go as high as he wants to; he snatched 140kg in the training hall which is 30kg off his high but still good enough for A group).

The most exciting thing to watch will be the 89kg comp where Tian Tao (world record clean and jerk) and Li Dayin (world record snatch, total) will lift against each other. Italian Antonino Pizzolato will compete but shouldn't be a threat. Bulgarian threat Karlos Nassar (AKA, the oldest looking teen in the world) is out with a horrifying full separation of the achilles injury so... that's that. Venezuela has a nice athlete but I doubt he'll be much of a fight for China.

102kg comp will have Li Huanhua (AKA GigaChad) lifting in his debut in the category against Olympic Champion Messo Hassona (AKA Happy Face) from Qatar.

On the lady's side, rising star and 64kg 2022 champ Pei Xinyi comes down to the 59kg to take on reigning champion, Yenny Alvarez from Colombia. Kuo Hsingchun from Chinese Taipei used to dominate this category until she was dethroned last year by Alvarez and then beaten again in the IWF Grand Prix by Pei. Kuo looks to be in shit form this year so a PRC vs ROC rivalry is not expected.

Liao Guifang (71kg) and Li Wenwen (Unlimited) are looking to extend their reign and steamroll the competition again.

this is one the paradoxes of sports. Asians have the stereotype of being small and weak. and yet historically China has the most golds at the world weightlifting championships. looks like theres a lot more to it than brute strength. a lot of technique involved.

They even recruited an NBA player, Kyle Anderson, who is part ethnic Chinese for the national team. Are there any more part ethnic Chinese players in the NBA?
