Vietnam building deterrent against China in disputed seas with submarines

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Vietnam will soon have a credible naval deterrent to China in the South China Sea in the form of Kilo-class submarines from Russia, which experts say could make Beijing think twice before pushing its much smaller neighbor around in disputed waters.

A master of guerrilla warfare, Vietnam has taken possession of two of the state-of-the-art submarines and will get a third in November under a $2.6 billion deal agreed with Moscow in 2009. A final three are scheduled to be delivered within two years.

While communist parties rule both Vietnam and China and annual trade has risen to $50 billion, Hanoi has long been wary of China, especially over Beijing's claims to most of the potentially energy-rich South China Sea. Beijing's placement of an oil rig in waters claimed by Vietnam earlier this year infuriated Hanoi but the coastguard vessels it dispatched to the platform were always chased off by larger Chinese boats..... to read more

Some follow-ups;

Most likely Chinese naval higher ups already factored into the equation when Vietnam took delivery of the first two Kilos as opposed to the article's expecting soon. There's already an increase in vessels being equipped with VDS, probably expect more with the next batch of 056s.

1. The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Formidable-class frigate RSS Intrepid and the People’s Liberation Army (Navy) (PLA(N)) Jiangkai II-class frigate Yulin conducted a bilateral naval exercise today. The exercise comprised naval helicopter cross-deck landings, manoeuvring drills and gunnery firings.

2. Prior to the exercise, RSS Intrepid conducted a port call at Ma Xie Naval Base in Zhanjiang, China, from 30 August to 3 September 2014. During the port call, RSS Intrepid hosted a reception for personnel from the PLA(N) South Sea Fleet. In addition, personnel of both navies engaged in exercise planning and ship visits.

3. Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Lai Chung Han was also in China for a working visit from 1 to 3 September 2014, in conjunction with the port call. He earlier met with the PLA(N)’s Political Commissar Admiral Liu Xiaojiang and Commander of PLA(N) South Sea Fleet Vice-Admiral Jiang Weilie in Beijing and Zhanjiang respectively.

4. Singapore and China enjoy warm and friendly defence ties. The professional and personal interactions at the leadership and working levels have enhanced mutual understanding and friendship between the RSN and the PLA(N).

KRI Bung Tomo (357), the lead ship in a three-vessel corvette class on order for the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL), arrived at the port city of Belawan in Northern Sumatra on 8 September.

Bung Tomo was inducted into the TNI-AL at Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom, on 18 July, along with sister ship KRI John Lie (358), in a ceremony presided over by Indonesia's Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro. Third-in-class KRI Usman Harun (359) was not commissioned during the ceremony.

Originally built for the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) under a contract signed in January 1998, the corvettes were laid down by BAE Systems between November 1999 and April 2000.

This is said to be on the Vietnamese Gepard. It looks like a stood-up transformer to me.

It doesn't look more powerful than Chinese 056 light frigate and the Chinese one has powerful HQ-10 SAM

It has more Anti-Ship missiles (8 vs 4)

It seems HQ-011 doesn't have any air defence SAM ... it will be a sitting duck against Chinese PLAN in no time

Yes and Darussalam get by Brunei for replace them are not a real combat vessel, one OPV fairly well armed for surface combat but without AA missiles or ciws and no ASW weapons..

In this zone only 2 countries get ships with Area Air Defense : Thailand with its FFG Type 25T/Cl Naresuan upgrade use ESSM and Singapore with its very nice FFG Formidable which use Aster-15 and maybe Aster-30 but no confirmed in SIPRI reports.
But can' t have "AEGIS" capibility with Herakles radar.

China SSF have yet 3 AEGIS DDG and soon 4.

That is not correct.

The anti-missile system aboard the two current Vietnamese Gephard frigates (HQ-011 and HQ-012) is the Russian Palma system, which it the export name for the Russian Kashtan system. You can see it installed there on the HQ-011 just aft of the main gun.

This is a very modern and very effective anti-air, anti-missile system. The two additional Gephard frigates that the Vietnamese are building will have the same.

Palma/Kashtan is a combination gun and missile system. The guns used are six-barrel 30 mm rotary cannons. Each of those guns (and there are two with each system) are the Russian GSh-30K. Each individual rotary cannon has a higher rate of fire than the GAU-8 on the Goalkeeper or the M61 Vulcan on the Phalanx. The round is also larger and heavier.

The air defense missiles that is used by the system are Russian 9M311 missiles. They are SACLOS guided missiles and are steered automatically by the command module. The warhead is a rod warhead with a steel cube fragmentation and is either laser or radio fused. Detonation creates a complete circle of fragmentation that is 5 meters in radius, exploding in front of the oncoming missile to destroy it.

The combination of the two (missiles and guns), provides a more comprehensive defense for the vessel, particularly when compared to single mode system, either guns alone, or missiles alone, for CIWS.

To say that these Vietnamese vessels do not have any SAM defense and would be a sitting duck against anti-shipping missiles is simply not correct.

Each gun has a range of up to 4,000 meters and a fire rate of 9,000 rounds per minute.

The missiles have a range of up to 10,000 meters and are all aspect at altitudes from wave skimming up to 20,000 feet.

The system carries eight missiles ready to fire, and these systems usually have an auto-loader with an additional 32 missiles stored below deck.

So, they have a very decent anti-air defense for such frigates. It is not an area defense, but very good for themselves.

Also, the Chinese Type 056 corvette uses an eight cell launcher for the FN-3000L system, which uses the surface to air verison of the TY-90 missile. The FN-3000L variant of the TY-90 missile is a very good close in defense missile similar to the US Rolling Air Frame Missile. It has a range of 9 km against sub-sonic missiles and 6 km against supersonic missiles.

So with 8 of those missiles with a range of 9 km max, and that being really the only decent anti-missile defense, compared to the Gephards 40 missiles with a 10km range, which are backed up by two 9,000 round perminute cannons for close in missile dfense, the Gephard is actually better armed than the Type 056 for anti-air defense.
