Impressive navy compared with Philippines, Cambodia and Bahrain, but doubtful it could even stand up to Singapore in a real naval war.
I would not be so sure of that.
The Navyies of both natins are very similar.
In submarines I would give the Vietnamese the edge. They will have 6 brand new Improved KIlos while Singapore is replacing its 1969 vintage subs with four new Archer class (which are a derivative of the Vastergotland Class SSKs). All of them are decnt SSKs...but the Vitnamese will have six of them.
IN surface combataants they are similarly armed.
Here are the specs of what they bothjhave for their major surface combatants:
Gephard FFG (2 complete, 2 building, 2 more planned)
Diplace: 2,100 tons
Armament:
8 x Switchbalde (120 km)
1 x Kashta (missile and Gun CIWS)
1 x 76mm AK-176 DP Gun
2 x AK-630 CIWS
4 x 16 PK-16 Countermeasure Rocket Launchers
Aircraft : (Hanger for one helo)
1 x Ka-27 ASW Helo
Formidable FFG (6 complete)
Diplace: 3,200 tons tons
Armament:
8 x Harpoon (130 km)
4 x 8 (32) Silver VLS for Aster 15/20 missile
1 x 76mm Oto Melara DP Gun
2 x 25mm Typhoon atuocannon
4 x 50cal MG
3 x 1Sagen Decoy Launch System
3 x WASS C130 ASW Suite Launchers
Aircraft : (Hanger for two helos)
1 x S-70 Seahawk ASW Helo
Tarantul Mssile Corvett (Modernixed)
Displacement: 540 tons
16 x Kh-35 Switchblade missiles (120 KM)
4 x SA-N-5 CIWS SAM
1 x 76mm AK-176 DP Gun
2 x AK-630 CIWS
Victory Missile corvette (6 Complete)
Displacement: 595 tons
8 x Harpoon missiles (130 KM)
2 x 8 Cell VLS Barak-1 CIWS
1 x 76mm Oto Melaro DP Gun
2 x 3 A244/S Torpedo tubes
4 x 50cal MG
So 6 Formidable (which are a modernized and much more powerful French Lafayette class) against 6 Gerphards. Missiles, guns, and sensors are comparable.
But ultimatley 10 of these much improved and modernized Trantula corvettes, each of which will carry 16 swithcblad SSMs vs 6 of the Victory Class which carry 8 Harpoons each.
Honestly, it could go either way, depending on the training and professionalism of the crews...and I know that Singapore is squared away, but everything I her tells me that Vietnam is squared away as well.
Honestly, I do not see those two ever coming to combat against one another. To the contrary, both have armed similarly, with modren and capable equipment to try and forestall any Chinese ambitions. That is the concern in the area that is diving Singapore and Vietnam to have such modern fleets, and driving people like MAlaysia, and particularly the Philippines who cannot afford what Singapore and Vietnam are doing to try and get some better euipment rom the US< JApan, and Australia.
As long as China continues to produce films and pictures showing its militarization of its SCS islands, that trend will continue IMHO< and drive these various nations together.
China would be much better served IMHO to produce films of the Light HOUses and other MAriner infrastructure (docking facilities, repair facilities, etc) it is building, and pictures of the tourism it is generating, than these pics and films of their soldiers nd military equipment.
But that's just my opinion.
