Hm I dont think the Baluch tribes in the area have to much to say about anything:) Especially since it is Chinese money that have been paying for the base and its of vital Pakistani intrest especially in a shooting war with India.

I do think that the PLA navy group are capable of testing the US navy hegemony in the indian ocean and persian golf. I mean one AEIGIS destroyer and one other very capable destroyer is a very convincing argument. Especially if its permitted to be based in Gwadar pakistan (very recently uppgraded to full capacity). The american would need an overwhelming force to bully them out of there and I am not sure that the new american president have the stomach for that.

I agree.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The PLAN has no Aegis equipped ships. And a SOV 956 is not close to being an Aegis ship.. Please don't go there. Just explain yourself better.

Especially if its permitted to be based in Gwadar pakistan (very recently uppgraded to full capacity).

Who? The PLAN or USN.

The american would need an overwhelming force to bully them out of there and I am not sure that the new american president have the stomach for that.

What makes you think the new American President has no stomach for the sort of confrontation you are refering to?

Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

Yes indeed one friendly AIGIS destroyer and one other very capable destroyer in port should give the pakistanis some backbone. Pakistan bend over backwards to the americans on the assumption that they would be overwhelmed by USN. But the passive protection of the chinese sqadron (USN / india would hesitate to try to bomb Karatchi / Gawar with that kind of force present) should change the equation in Paktistans favor.

If the pakistanis allow PLA navy to use Gawar this would only be the beginning and more units (subs osv) would probably be on the way to be stationed there and Pakistan may finally get some serious backbone.

Thanks beregard..but I still don't fully understand your statements.

Pakistan bend over backwards to the Americans on the assumption that they would be overwhelmed by USN.

Huh?? When has the USN ever threated Pakistan?

mods note: I moved the last two post whereas they are more in tune with this thread.

Hm PLAN does probably not have a true AIGIS capability but destroyer 171 have a very impressive anti air capability (with its phased layer radar that is capable of tracking multiple targets and 48 HQ9 air defence missiles that it is capable of firering in rapid succetion from an VLS system) that is decades more advanced than anything in the region (except USN).

Gawar is used by the US military for their operations in afghanistan but only to in a "civilian" sense (supply) no military ships. The reason for that was that was that Bush 2001 thretend with war if US wasnt allowed to use pakistani ports and airfields for the Afghanistan invasion. Gawar was built in the 90s untill now with chinese money and was to be an alternative base for the pakistani navy. But it have enormous dimentions and it was speculated then and now that it was alsaw to be a base for the Chinese fleet since it was idealy situated to help protect the sealanes from the persian golf to China.

Bush thretened the Pakistanis with war if they didnt open upp their bases and with the US post 9/11 hell bent on destruction nobody would whant to get into their way. But Obama have other worries besides Pakistan and Chinese influence.....

Thank you.

I remember that story...after I looked it up.. Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is the person that made the claim. Pres. Bush, of course, denied it.

"Be prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the Stone Age."

Hm I guess Armitage spelled out what Bush ment with "Either you are with us or against us" and made sure Musharaf understod the consequenses:)

Gwadar is one of the biggest deep sea ports in the world and china has pitched in close to one billion dollars so they have a big stake in the port and china has been promised "sovereign guarantees" over the port by the Pakistanis.

If Gwadar is the ultimate goal for the Chinese sqadron it sure would make a intresting 2009 in this part of South asia with two angry predators pitched against each other with two elephants circling around them trying to manover into a adventegeous postion -all in a fairly cramped area.
