The model in this video has a very high degree of reconstruction, but there are still some issues with the air intake. Some people now believe that the real aircraft may have a Caret intake instead of a DSI intake

Who?

Makes no sense. The whole point of the tailless design was stealth why would they use a caret style intake?

The F-22 also uses caret intake. Same goes for Chengdu's J-36. Even if any, the caret style intakes certainly didn't result in significant enough compromises that would jeopardize the LO capabilities of the F-22, let alone the VLO capabilities of the J-36.

I'm certain that there are reasons for the designers and engineers of the J-36 to adopt caret style intakes for the two outboard engines instead of using DSI style intake (and similarly for the J-XDS, should this be the actual case).

F22 is a 40 year old 5th gen though.

That's some speculative comments from the Chinese community

And the J-36 first took to the skies not even 3 months ago. Chances are, the engineering drawings for the J-36 were finalized no earlier than 2021 or 2022 (which is roughly when Yankee first heard of the J-36's three-engine configuration, IIRC) and no latter than late-2023 or early-2024.

I'd suggest treating the bolded phrase as it is until such intake design is visually confirmed on the J-XDS.

Thank you for the reminder. I will add annotations for speculative content next time ;)

An interesting theory is that dsi intakes while having better frontal stealth, damages sideways stealth by having curved bumps visible on sides. Caret intakes have reflection problems, but this could be more easily mitigated by stuffing more radar-absorbant materials between the intake and the fuselage, an otherwise unimportant area
