Why are people obsessed about FC31 vs F35 when each new project of 5th gen jet looks pretty much the same to untrained eyes?

Indian's HAL AMCA
Korean's KAI KFX
Turkey's TAI TFX
Japan's F3

If you want to compare details, yes, they are all different. But at the first glance the dual engine versions are all clones of FC-31 to some extend. The single engine versions are all F35 look alikes.

Maybe because every single one of the fighters you listed is a paper airplane as of 2017?

The Japanese Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin has taken flight on 22 april 2016.

Yep, Japans flying proof of concept is a "scaled down" version of the production bird,, it will be enlarged and upgraded... but its very "polished looking",,, remember Japan brought us Nikon and Canon in the photography world, they do upscale and polished very well!

count them out at your own risk? but the others are very much "paper tigers"!
