so much of BRICS is just about opening up new business opportunities and trading between the countries.

A lot of market access from all these discussions and deals.
Brazil still seems to favor the US more so than China. I mean if another bolsonaro gets elected, how many of these projects would be put on ice?

Its a gamble. I think china needs to also have news and journalism investments as well, to shift public opinion?

Economically their interest doesn't align as they compete with each for agricultural and mineral exports, with China there is a complementary relationship. So yes foreign policy may change but not in economic realm.

Im sure Bolsonaro's backers love money as much as Lula backers do. Last time Bolsonaro got in i can't really recall big anti china policies, there were a lot of election rhetoric stuff etc...

Kind of like Milei in Argentina, those goddam commies in the Chinese government, we don't deal with them we deal with the people's bank of China those guys aren't commies they are the people of china like the name of the bank says...:p

Paper on US/EU failure to compete in the Global South. Can't beat something with nothing.

There is a common perception in Europe and the United States that China’s soft power charm offensive of the first two decades of the twentieth century has failed. The idea is that most people dislike China because of its human rights record, political system, and botched reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, among other factors. However, the reality is somewhat different. Figure 1, based on survey data from 35 countries, shows that perceptions of China, while still lagging far behind the U.S. in high-income countries, are much more positive in the economically less developed nations of the Global South. China is not yet ahead of the USA in their bilateral competition for global influence and soft power, but it has closed the favourability gap considerably.

Perceptions of US and European neglect or lack of interest benefit China, which is greatly intensifying its trade relations with the Global South since 2020

In contrast, the European Global Gateway Initiative, which has not been promoted effectively and has consequently not received much publicity, has not yet produced many results in terms of implemented investments and positive perception. The incoming Trump administration’s decision to cut aid programmes in Africa and other parts of the Global South is also likely to be contributing to negative perceptions of the reliability of the US as a partner. In the case of Europe, long-term memories of colonialism tend to undermine the EU’s image as a potential partner, meaning that Brussels has work to do to rebuild trust – a factor which many European policy-makers have been slow to acknowledge.

Speaking of ASEAN, those visits are part of the ongoing summit with ASEAN+China+GCC.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Southeast Asia sought to strengthen trade ties with China and the Gulf states in a landmark trilateral summit on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, aimed at enhancing economic cooperation in response to sweeping U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Leaders from ASEAN, China and the Gulf Cooperation Council agreed to form a joint working group to foster closer economic collaboration, according to a draft statement seen by Nikkei Asia. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
