This is what I call Iran behaving badly. After getting help from China to achieve peace in the region. Instead of making things harder for the west, it is simply putting China in an impossible position.

Maybe you should do more reading to see what is going on between Iran and Pakistan instead of citing a CNN article. They are both attacking terrorist groups in each other's countries, about as win-win as it gets. This is precisely what SCO was designed to facilitate.

I have to say this was predictable. Iran wasn't interested in regional peace with no caveats. It wanted peace with Saudi Arabia because it wanted to lower the temperature on some fronts so it can raise it on others. But the attack on Pakistan was surprising.

I get the impression that China is decidedly less enthusiastic in dealing with Pakistan these days. The core security interest vis-à-vis India will, of course, remain, but I don't see China expending a lot of diplomatic calories on Pakistan's behalf with Iran here.

Also noteworthy is that these very accurate ballistic missiles Iran is flinging around weren't an entirely indigenous Iranian development.

Pakistan is the one that's leaning towards the west again and they have a history of harbouring or tolerating terrorists, including those that target Chinese workers in beluchistan.

But of course the Iranian attack shouldn't have been done without asking Pakistan for permission first
