Ohhh...I always saw Hornets with those big tanks and I never knew what they were...now I know.

I agree with the general consensus, the Navy needs to have an aircraft that can fufill the ASW, strike, refueling, SAR and other roles. The S-3 was an excellent multipurpose aircraft. The USN needs an aircraft that can do all those things. They're trying to make the Hornet that aircraft in the meantime, but I don't think that will work too well. At least it only has to last until the V-22 shoes up, if that's what it's role will be.

Well I have to say I find reading this thread deeply disturbing.

For the record, this Viking has not been withdrawn and will continue in Service for many, many years to come :eek:ff

Ha, ha ,ah..Viking we know that YOU will be around for a while:D

As for the S-3 Viking..It's end is very near....:(

I just want to thank everyone who has responded to this thread. I couldnt find an actual document on the net denoting the demise of the S-3. I was really concerned that I was going to look like a Horses rear posting my first thread here. All your posts have been great, thanks for makeing me feel at home here and your indepth knowledge of the subject.
