what weapon were they using? Looks like a AEK but with 7.39mm ammo?

the the AEK-973 is chambered in 7.62x39mm.
remember The Russians when they decided to move to a smaller higher velocity round after encountering early M16's in Vietnam they started by little more than rechambering the AKM and making a few design changes they intended to introduce to the line anyway. as the AK74 was introduced the Russians then made larger changes in the follow on generations. the round they developed the 5.45x39 was specifically engineered to fit the same carbine and magazine as the AKM with a absolute minimum of changes. and all three rounds can fit in more or less the same chambers with only need of changing bolts barrels and magazines case in point the Biggest Changes happened to the Ak74 when the Russians introduced the AK74M new stock, new mags, new construction. AK74M was quickly followed by the Ak100 series. 100 series from Ak101-103 were little more then AK74M's re chambered for 5.56x45 NATO and 7.62x39mm respectively well 100 series 102-104-105 were shortened versions of the Ak74M the 105 being chambered in the same 5.45x39mm. proving this even more here in the west a number of arms makers specifically rechambered there weapons from 5.56 Nato to fit the russian rounds in some cases going so far as to introduces rapid caliber change kits. so seeing a AEK firing the older round should not be such a shock. AEK also has the 972 variant which fires 5.56x45mm NATO.

OT given the ease of conversion between assault rifle calibers I would not be to surprised if one day we found out that Norinco had prototyped a variant of the QBZ95 in 5.45x39mm or 7.62x39mm

Ok yes this is the old Soviet Union era equipment, but it’s still nice to remember the good old Cold War days. Oh, wait we’re back in the new Cold War now…..

Yuri! got some Splaining to do!..
back then Alfa group was KGB, they particularly specialized in false flag. in 1979 they deployed to Afghanistan as part of the opening act of the Russo Afghan invasion dressed as Afghan military. so seeing them with foreign weapons should not be a surprise
