The Russian Defense Ministry received a batch of upgraded T72B3M tanks
The press service of Uralvagonzavod reported that the new protection makes it possible to increase the survivability and effectiveness of the use of armored vehicles not only in combined arms combat, but also in the course of hostilities with the massive use of anti-tank weapons.
MOSCOW, December 2. /TASS/. The research and production corporation Uralvagonzavod (part of the Uralvagonzavod concern (UVZ) of the Rostec state corporation) has delivered a batch of modernized T-72B3M tanks to the RF Ministry of Defense. This was reported to TASS on Friday in the press service of UVZ.
Uralvagonzavod sent a batch of T-72B3M tanks to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Work on upgrading the T-72B to the level of the upgraded T-72B3 was carried out as part of the state defense order. A set of measures for the modernization of "seventy-two" was developed by design engineers of the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering (as part of UVZ). It affected almost all systems, as a result of which the maneuverability of vehicles improved, their firepower and security level increased," the concern said.
It is noted that the new protection can significantly increase the survivability and effectiveness of the use of armored vehicles not only in combined arms combat, but also in the course of hostilities with the massive use of anti-tank weapons.
In addition, as UVZ noted, the upgraded T-72B3s are also equipped with a new fire control system that automates the process of preparing a shot and significantly improves shooting accuracy.
"The tank is equipped with a boosted V-92S2 engine with a capacity of 1,000 hp with an automatic control system for the operation of the power plant and automatic control of the thermal regime. The engine was developed by ChTZ-Uraltrak specialists," UVZ added.
"Today, Russia especially needs the help of Uralvagonzavod, our help. Therefore, we are working in a special mode. Production volumes have increased, workshops are working around the clock. The team is set up in a combative manner. Everyone understands that this is important and necessary. We will do everything that depends on us!" - said the senior foreman for the repair of equipment of the mechanical assembly shop of Uralvagonzavod Oleg Belousov.
"An inexpensive way to qualitatively saturate troops with equipment"
According to Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine , such modernization makes it possible to give the tanks of old issues a modern look against the backdrop of a special operation.
"Such modernization at least meets the expectations and possibilities. Considering that the fleet at the storage bases is quite large, this is a relatively inexpensive and quick way to quickly and efficiently saturate the troops with armored vehicles and, in particular, tanks," he said in an interview with TASS.
The expert suggested that it is much more difficult to increase serial production in such volumes than to carry out modernization at the existing facilities of UVZ in parallel with it.
"More modern weapons"
As Aleksey Leonkov, editor of Arsenal of the Fatherland , explained in an interview with TASS , the tank receives the opportunity for further modernization even at the stage of creation. “Starting with the T-72, they are subject to modernization: you can change the fire control system, install a more accurate one, install new active dynamic protection systems, improve the same ammunition - I mean, first of all, armor-piercing feathered sub-caliber projectiles, which in the B3 version are already more promising and are capable of penetrating thicker armor than the previous ones,” the expert said. “All these things make the tank a more modern weapon after modernization.”
Leonkov emphasized that design solutions during modernization do not change the main thing - the hull and turret of the tank. According to him, in the process of upgrading the tank, first of all, the protection of the vehicle is improved. This is necessary so that it can withstand the impact of shells from modern anti-tank systems, such as anti-tank missile systems or rocket-propelled anti-tank grenades with a cumulative warhead. At the same time, such weapons are being improved over time, so the process of upgrading a tank on an old base is "not endless", Leonkov points out.
"In our country, the T-90 replaced the T-72, and there is a completely different concept for armor, for active dynamic protection," he added.
About the tank
T-72B3M is a modernized version of the T-72B3 tank, which received a new aiming system with a digital display, as well as a rear-view television camera. The armor of the combat vehicle is reinforced with side screens with Relikt dynamic protection modules. In addition, the tank received a new 125 mm cannon with increased barrel lifetime, a new R-168-25U-2 Akveduk VHF radio station, new fire-fighting equipment and a Sosna-U multi-channel gunner's sight.
