Two Russian Servicemen Killed on Dec. 31 in Shelling of Hmeymim Base - MoD
Two military personnel died in a mortar attack on Russia’s Khmeimim airbase in Syria’s Latakia Province on December 31, the Russian Defense Ministry has said, adding that reports of seven jets being destroyed were “fake news.”
“[Russian newspaper] Kommersant’s report on the alleged ‘destruction’ of seven Russian military aircraft at Khmeimim Airbase is fake,” the ministry said in a statement.
The MoD reasserted that the Russian Air Force deployed to Syria retains its combat readiness and continues to fulfill its duties.

citing two unnamed military and diplomatic sources that militants linked to a terrorist group shelled the airbase and destroyed seven Russian military planes, specifically four Su-24 bombers, two Su-35C fighter jets and an Antonov An-72 transport aircraft on December 31. The report also claimed that more than 10 military personnel were injured in the mortar attack.

Earlier on Wednesday, the ministry reported that two pilots had died and a technician had sustained injuries when a Mi-24 helicopter

During a surprise visit to Khmeimim Airbase on December 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the withdrawal of a “significant part” of the Russian military contingent from Syria. The Syrian government agreed to extend Moscow’s right to use the bases in Tartus and Khmeimim for 49 years lease-free, and has already started upgrading the facilities.

In the wake of this attack, one can expect the Russians and Syrians to establish heavy, layered defenses for the Air Base and for the Naval Base. At present it seems that the Syrians are focusing on clearing out the last pockets near the Damascus District. Once this is achieved, all focus will shift toward Idlib province. Last month the big news was the Syrian military had taken full control of Beit Jinn. Remnant ISIS groups are cornered between the Golan Heights and the border with Jordan. There have been serious reports which suggest the willing evacuation of ISIS fighters from Eastern Syria (East of River Euphrates) by American military. What the Syrians, Russians and Iranians want though, is hard evidence against the Americans that directly implicates them in directly or indirectly helping in ISIS evacuating the area.

With all of this going on, the announcement of Russian military withdrawal and now the attack on their Air Base in Latakia province. Would mean that Syria would be looking for greater Iranian presence in their territory.

Idlib is the key to ending the terrorist's strong hold in Syria and its HTS (not ISIS) who are in power their. Hayat Tahreer Al-Sham (HTS) is the only Al-Qaeda group which is operating in Syria, which controls any territory. It's this group which now needs to be eliminated, just like ISIS has been in Deir Azor. We will have to wait and see how the Syrians mitigate between flushing out last pockets of ISIS in the area near Golan Heights, South West of Damascus and HTS in the Northern province of Idlib.

The sooner this is achieved by the Syrian-Lebanese-Iranian-Russian coalition, the greater the chance for reaching a settlement between Free Syrian movement and the Syrian government.

) is the Kremlin said the Russian pull out from Syria had begun (some MP Battalion came back to Russia today)

if there was a large scale withdrawal now (and if Mr. Assad was able to hold up), I would be proven wrong about what I said in Syria Thread long time ago, which was Russia is bogged down in Syria according to me

(the funny part was Obama had said it earlier than me, but I was unaware of it while posting LOL)

There goes Russia's profit that they made from China by selling a few dozen of those Su-35s. Now they have to use whatever scant money they have left in their military budget due to economic sanctions to replace all lost lives military positions and equipment.
I think I know what you mean, but they're even more dependent on the oil price ($10-per-barrel-drop could cost them $20b or so in one year) etc. etc.

one thing is using Syria as a huge proving ground for their military equipment and personnel (Dec 27, 2017
