, May 22. /TASS/. A unit of marines of Russia’s Baltic Fleet has performed landing on an unimproved shore from aboard a hovercraft and supported the party with gunfire as part of a naval exercise in the area of Khmelyovka naval testing range, Captain 2nd Rank Vladimir Matveyev, the official spokesman for the Baltic Fleet said on Thursday.

"The crew of The Yevgeniy Koshechkov, the world’s biggest aircushion amphibious ship has successfully performed the tactical assignment to establish a party of marines on an unimproved beach near the Kmelyovka testing range," he said

The ship’s artillery simulated bringing down an aerial attack vehicle and an onshore battery of the simulated enemy and cut up a corridor for the marines. The landing party got to the shore on BTR-82A armored personnel carriers where it drilled a breaking through the defense lines of the simulated enemy, Capt. Matveyev said.

The Yevgeny Koshechkov and its twin, The Mordovia, belong to The Zubr family of ships and are the largest operational aircushion amphibious ships. They can move on land surface and swamps and drop landing parties deep inside the enemy defenses.

Usually you would get a contact with sonar , sonar buoy or whatever , but you would need to investigate and establish precise coordinates of that potential target .

I'm sorry, I should've calmed down before posting yesterday in the evening :) during peacetime, a sub would not be shot at immediately ... and talking war is prohibited here, isn't it?

You could do that with helicopter but it would take time (helicopter needs to get ready for take off etc ... ) Also, I doubt each and every corvette would actually carry ASW helicopter . These are after all small ships. Therefore, usual tactics would be to get close at full speed and probably losing contact , then trying to reestablish it . Meanwhile, your helicopter would be ready for take-off . As for Medvedka and similar standoff weapons , Project 20830 ships don't have them, and as far as I know , neither Project 20835 ships . Instead, they are armed with Paket-NK torpedoes .

well, I assumed we were talking the Project 20835 ... anyway I think you're right, and I wrongly assumed they would be able to shoot missile-torpedoes since the Redut VLS can accommodate them, but it seems they won't according to both

(they should use just the Paket torps -- and yeah, that's what you said :) in the process I found this cool picture:

About those Tu-160 . I don't know would they restart production, but recently this piece of information appeared on blogs and forums . If true, this will be more significant then empty boasting about 50 bombers .

The plant “Uralskaya Kuznitsa” (part of the Group “Mechel”) has signed a contract for the supply of drives to the upgraded engines NK-32, which will be equipped with the Russian Air Force strategic bombers.

“Uralskaya Kuznitsa” will supply companies which are parts of the JSC “United Engine Building Corporation” (State Corporation Rostec), five types of discs from high-temperature alloys. The plant’s products will be used in the production of a new generation turbojet engine NK-32 which is one of the largest and most powerful aircraft engine in the world. NC-32 for the second phase of strategic bombers Tu-160, which provides for the modernization of the state armaments program.

I doubt they could be used on Project 20380 corvettes (Steregushchy-class) . Length of that missile supposed to be 5.65 m , as opposed to 4.75 m of E variant. Also I doubt that radars on such small ship could fully exploit its long range .
As for Project 20385 (Gremyashchy-class ) , it is hard to tell what would happen to those ships (already mentioned engine problems) . Theoretically, they have 16 VLS cells , but could they support longer missiles - I don't know .

yes, right after I had posted (on Monday) about these AA missiles, I realized I obviously should look at what radar(s) those ships have ... now I'll try to find something relevant; do you happen to have some useful link(s)?

here's as complete account as I was able to find (thanks to somebody with the nick Pinochet :) on a Russian forum):

(for those who don't know Russian, related to AAW capabilities of Project 2238X: the Furke radar ("in the radome up on the mast") can detect air targets from 110 km if they fly at the altitude between one to four kilometers, and it works as fire-control for AAMs, too)

This most likely means that Project 20835 corvettes would not be build (except 2 already laid down) , or in other words they don't have powerful enough engines to propel them at required speed .

(entry 20.05.2015), each of these two should now get four of these:

about six thousand hp)
that source also says the work on those two ships should be finished as late as in the 3Q of 2016 (Gremyashchy); in September of 2017 (Provornyy)

Russia's fiscal state is not exactly in pristine condition. Continuous upgrade to existing airframes is one thing but re-starting the production line is something else. Consistent with typical hype coming out of Russia I would believe it when there is actual delivery.

True, but it seems to work pretty good for the Iranians with their constant upgrading of old F-14 Tomcats.

should be signed in the near-term,” RAC MiG CEO Sergey Korotkov told Interfax-AVN. According to him, the contract and all the required documentation are being prepared. “The documents are being prepared,” Korotkov said.

He added that the current State Arms Program includes procurement of MiG-35 fighters by Russian Ministry of Defense. “Deliveries of MiG-35 fighters to Russian air forces may be started next year,” Korotkov added.

It was reported earlier that a brand-new aircraft is offered to the air forces instead of MiG-35 prototype, which took part in a tender issued by Indian Ministry of Defense.

MiG-35 fighter will be able to use the latest types of weapons; it is fitted with cutting-edge avionics suite and Zhuk-AE radar with active phased antenna array. The station allows tracking 30 and

MiG-35 is designed for air superiority missions and attacking ground and surface targets using high-precision weapons from outside the range of enemy air defense systems. This is the “4++”-generation fighter.
