Exisitng Russian Mi-26. The proposed helicopter will be significantly larger.

Foxtrot Alpha said:
China And Russia Team Up To Build World's Largest, Most Powerful Chopper.

Currently, the largest and most powerful helicopter to have ever entered production is the gargantuan Mi-26 'Halo' of Russian origin, of which many still serve in governmental and commercial roles around the globe. After decades of the 'Halo' being on top, a new record holder is now said to be on the way, with Russia and China joining forces to make it happen.

This new super-heavy lift class chopper was originally thought to be an outgrowth of the existing, all-weather capable and highly modernized Mi-26T2, but now it seems that it will only borrow a few elements from it, and will overwhelmingly be a 'clean sheet' design.

The fresh design approach is due to China's eye popping requirements. According to Russia, they are said to include almost twice the lifting capacity of the already freakishly powerful and huge Mi-26. That would put the new chopper's lifting ability at somewhere around 80,000lbs! In comparison, the CH-53K 'King Stallion,' America's latest heavy lift design, has a total gross weight just slightly above that figure at 88,000lbs.

Originally, this new Russian-Chinese design was thought to be an outgrowth of the Mi-26T2, although this is now inaccurate as Chinese performance demands are far outside any existing designs' theoretical capabilities.

The Mi-26 can already haul vehicles that are larger than what can fit even into a C-130 Hercules, including everything from armored personnel carriers to dump trucks. Yet China has had a uniquely large demand for heavy under-slung cargo carrying ability, for both construction and logistical purposes and there has been talk for the last decade or two about how a super-heavy lift helicopter could change the way some structures are built. This is especially true for modular vertical oriented structures that are intended to be built fast and replicated quickly, an area of architecture and construction that China continues to be the leader in.

According to Russian reports, multiple Chinese agencies are part of this new mega-chopper procurement program, including those that deal with emergency management and response. This makes some sense as during a natural disaster, or even a time of conflict, moving massive amounts of supplies quickly will be all that much more critical considering China's massive population.

A cost has not been publicly assigned to the program, nor has there been word regarding what percentage Russia will share in the costs of developing such an exotic machine. Regardless of the public absence of some details, Russia says this new design requirements will be locked by the first quarter of 2015.

Heaviley armed ships, comparable to FREMM frigates with much larger displacement.
Meaning that the FREMM has a much larger displacement.

FREMM at, or over 6,500 tons, with a 6,000 nm range at 15 knots and a crew of 145.

Stereguschy is like 2,200 tons with a 3,400 nm range at 14 knots and a crew of 90.

So, 1/3 the displacement, a little over half the range, and a lot less personnel for watch, battle damage repair, etc., etc.

The FREMM have a lot of room for other accommodations and duties, as well. They are, IMHO, really DDGs class vessels, but called FFGs.

The Sterguschy is a heavy corvette to frigate size vessel.

Different roles.

I like these new Russian vessels.

Bltizo informed me that Foxtrot Alpha is wrong on the weight predictions of the new joint Russian/Sino helicopter. It will not be as heavy as they say, perhaps more in line with the Super Stallion with a 38 ton TOW. Which measn Foxtot Alpha was completely wrong and way off..

So,we do not really know the complete specs for this new helicopter. The Mi-26 is already significantly larger than the largest US helicopters in services (the CH-52E Super Stallions and MH-53E Sea Dragons) and also larger than the planned CH-53K King Stallion.

Here are some comparisons:

Russian: MI-26 Halo, 316 built
Length: 131 ft 4 in
Rotor Diameter: 105 ft
Height: 26 ft 9 in
Engines: 2 x D136 turboshafts, 11,400 shp each
Cruise Speed: 158 mph
Range: 1,190 miles
Service Ceiling: 15,100 ft.
Crew: 5
Capacity: 90 troops or 60 stretchers, 35,000 lbs
Empty weight: 62,170 lbs
Max Take-off Weight: 123,450 lbs

US: CH-53E Super Stallion, 234 built
Length: 99 ft
Rotor Diameter: 79 ft
Height: 27 ft 9 in
Engines: 3 x GE316A turboshafts, 4,380 shp each
Cruise Speed: 170 mph
Range: 620 miles
Service Ceiling: 18,500 ft.
Crew: 5
Capacity: 55 troops, 30,000 lbs internal, 32,000 lbs external
Empty weight: 33,226 lbs
Max Take-off Weight: 73,500 lbs

US: MH-53E Sea Dragon, 50 built
Length: 99 ft
Rotor Diameter: 72 ft 3 in
Height: 28 ft 4 in
Engines: 3 x GE316A turboshafts, 4,380 shp each
Cruise Speed: 172 mph
Range: 1,120 miles
Service Ceiling: 27,900 ft.
Crew: 8
Capacity: 30,000 lbs internal, 32,000 lbs external
Empty weight: 33,226 lbs
Max Take-off Weight: 73,500 lbs

US: CH-53K King Stallion (Ground Test Prototype delivered in 2013, Flight Tests planned for 2015) 227 planned
Length: 99 ft
Rotor Diameter: 79 ft
Height: 27 ft 9 in
Engines: 3 x GE381B turboshafts, 7,500 shp each
Cruise Speed: 196 mph
Range: 600 miles
Service Ceiling: 18,800 ft.
Crew: 5
Capacity: 55 troops, 44,090 lbs internal
Empty weight: 33,226 lbs
Max Take-off Weight: 84,700 lbs

But those US Marine CH-53Es do operate off of US Navy LHDs so that is one of the principle differences. the Mi-26s would simply be too big for that.

The Navy Sea Dragon mine hunter has been configured for higher altitude and longer range for its sea duties.

The main thing the US will get with the CH-53K is more powerful engines, faster speed, and a little more weight carrying. Still far smaller than the Halo.

I didn't express myself well. What I ment to say is that Steregushchy-class has heavy armament for a ship of that size , comparable to FREMM frigates . Of course, with much larger displacement FREMM frigates have better sea going capabilities . It's a difference in design philosphies , naval strategies and expected opponents .

As far as I understand, France still has an indefinite hold on the delivery of both of these vessels. The first, the Vladivostok already completed builder's sea trials.

Not indefinetly, France has time until the end of this month to deliver first ship. After that, Russia will start procedure to get their money back and charge damages. Real question is what would India do with their Rafale deal if France doesn't deliver to Russia. Things are getting interesting . ;)

Official: Delivery of First Russian Mistral class LHD Vladivostok postponed "until further notice"
sgM7VpD.jpg

According to an official statement made by the French presidency on November 25th, the delivery of the first Mistral-class LHD, built for Russia is now on hold "until further notice". Russia and France signed a contract for two Mistral-class LHDs for $1.6 billion in June 2011. Under the contract, the first French Mistral-class amphibious assault ship, the Vladivostok, was to be delivered to Russia by the end of the year, while the second ship, the Sevastopol, is due to arrive next year.

"The President of the Republic considers that the current situation in the east of Ukraine still does not allow delivery of the first BPC (LHD). It therefore considers it appropriate to postpone, until further notice, the examination of the application for authorization necessary for the export of the first LHD to the Russian Federation, " said the French presidency in a statement.

Got nothing to do with anything related to India. US doesn't sell to Russia either, but is ready for JVs with India.

It has much to do with India, as Modi's government needs to decide what would happen with Rafale deal . Currently, both those for and against are lobbying for their respective sides. Unwillingness of France to fulfill contract with Russia could be a straw that broke camel's back, i.e. it could label France as unreliable supplier, coercing India to reject deal completely, or lessen the number of aircraft ordered.

Indian diesel-electric submarine "Sindukirti" launched in India
The multi-year saga of repair and modernization of diesel-electric submarines "Sindukirti 'in Visakhapatnam, India was an important event - the ship was launched. Serious participation in the preparation of the descent took a group of Russian experts, including representatives of "Sprockets".

Before launching
In early November, a group of factory workers returned to Severodvinsk, and to replace them went to another team. According to Deputy Chief of 7 Mikhail Blinov, the past trip was different special tensions, not only in the working points.
Our compatriots had to witness the devastating hurricanes that swept over Visakhapatnam on October 12, paralyzing life in the city and the shipyard where our countrymen were involved.
- Due to the fact that the city's infrastructure was destroyed, a huge city remained without electricity, as well as a shipyard. As a result, our work has been disrupted for a week. But we must pay tribute to the leadership «Hindustan Shipyard Ltd.» - in the shortest possible time was provided back-up electricity supply line, and work resumed on the order, - said Mikhail Blinov.
Another misfortune for group travelers became malaria, had never bothered. This time she did not remain indifferent to the "guests" - a group of many sick, and four of the returnees dolechivatsya already here. Now a dangerous disease are seriously - take all the necessary preparations for the prevention.
Haste and close attention to the course of the repair ship, according responsible for providing a conclusion ordering felt throughout a three-month trip. Even though forced because of Hurricane simple, the Indian military is not rescheduled launching the boat. However, maintaining the title of Russian shipbuilder, our specialists have coped with their work without disrupting the schedule obgovorёnnye general terms.
All October had to work overtime. At the same time from a group of one hundred two people (that is how much the Russians are involved in the repair of "Sindukirti") more than thirty again brought on board instead of resting in their spare time. To their credit - all sympathetic to the problem and in a very short time completed all activities on repair and preparation of order to be launched.
A lot had to do. Closed-built huge amount of documents. Before descending order over water installation and commissioning of equipment complexes "Pyrite-M" and "Palladium-M", responsible for the operation of the steering group and the ship's systems. Particularly helped in setting up a mechanic shop 10 AN Elenskiy. Presented to the customer mounted navigation system "Appassionata-EKM.1" and combat system AIUS "Lama-CME" modernized missile complex «Club-S» - the main weapon of the boat, completed work on a range of mine-torpedo weapons. I would also like to acknowledge the work of specialists "Arctic", namely VA Kulebakin SA Drochneva, RA Schilina, RF Patrakeeva, AS Borovik, AV Kruglov, AS Ershov, RG Smirnov.
Such large amounts reserved for the Russians, due to the fact that the Indians do not have much experience in setting up and repair complexes Russian submarines. Hence the numerous failures in the course of work, delays with various activities for repair and modernization. Sometimes they numbered two months, significantly delayed the general course of recovery "Sindukirti."
- "Thanks" this attitude is the same setting hydraulics and electrics complex "Palladium-M" cost us two weeks of hard work instead of the one and a half months at a normal pace, - says Mikhail Blinov.
On the eve of entering the open water in a three-shift operation had to contend with another difficulty - pripilovkoy tracks torpedo - stricter requirements to comply with the geometry forced to work hard for two weeks (RY showed their skills Perminin, Shuleva AA, VV SEMYANNIKOV from the shop 10).
Plus delays were added numerous consultations of our designers and engineers who are assisted by their Indian colleagues work.
Ahead of the ship's mooring stage trials that Russian experts "Sprockets", "Arctic" and "Aurora" hold together with the project manager Andrei Frolov. Andrew F. was at the forefront of repair "Sindukirti" and to this day continues started more than eight years ago the matter. Problematic issues to be addressed in Russia are controlled by the head of the department Andrei Nevenkina 7, so that in the distant Indian professionals do not feel neglected and deprived.
It should be noted that during this time the approach of the Indian side to repair the ship has changed for the better. They increased the number and level of experts on the order, the military almost daily appealed for help to the Russians up to solve some problems of its own.
The reluctance of the customer to postpone the execution of works at Russian breakdowns own terms inconvenience, but the years of experience that have gained shipbuilders in the repair of five Indian orders, undoubtedly helped.
- This is especially felt the last month and a half trip, - says Mikhail Blinov - Contact us became closer, canceled checks weekly, they were replaced daily, allowing more quickly to solve all problems.
Relax is not necessary - in the plans of the Indian side to finish mooring trials by the end of March 2015, so ahead of the Russians a few months of hard work in the hot sun of India.
Based on materials from the publication "North week."
