My family is actually taking advantage of the low gas price and going on a road trip to Corpus Christi/South Padre Islands on Sunday!

Will be visiting U.S.S Lexington when we stop by Corpus Christi. Can't wait since they not only have WWII era displays on the flight deck but also modern aircraft like the A-4, F-14, and F-18 (repainted Blue Angel style) on loan from Pensacola. This will be amazing!
Sounds great! We almost went there when we were down in August. Just did not have the time.

Take some pics and post them for us here.

I know down there in Texas the prices are even cheaper.

A friend emailed me from the Houston area and they said they were getting it at $1.92/gal.

wowwww, I am even more jealous now ... imagine I could get 1 US gallon in the US for what I pay for only 1 L in NZ .. I understand the British pay much more

In the summer I think I paid about €1,40/l Diesel, or about $7,21/gal. Right now I could get it as low as €1,10/l, or $5,207gal.
Reguar is about €0,20/l more, or $0,95/gal.
Prices are really plumetting lately. Seems the fracking boom in the US is showing some effects now.

Well….today I quit my job working for the government, after 7 years. I got tired of all the political games. I was never really that good at playing games since I’m an Engineer and that goes without saying. I start my new job in the private sector consulting for the same group of government offices I left.

It’s more difficult work, pays is comparable, but I will get home quicker to be with my family and my commute will be cut by 2/3, plus I can take the train and not drive. Hate to leave a cushy government job with a corner office and view :(, and I’m constantly having second thoughts, but what’s done is done. More important to be with the family and my young boys. I’ll get home at 17:30 and not 19:00.

Any thoughts lads? I could use the advice of my amigos.

I believe the private sector tends to be more demanding from employees, so you may need to shake off old rust. Getting used to a faster pace of work is not easy for a tardy man like me. Recognizing what are old habits that are not suitable in a new environment can be a challenge. But a ready smile and apologies, telling others where you came from previously should help to iron any crease out. Once in a while, break a bottle of Malbec with your new co-workers.

You are my amigos, I wish the best for you.

Well games at work do get old, and sounds like some things will be much better, I'm sure you are good at what you do, and I'm sure that the motivation to up your game will bring some new juice to your work. I worked in a for profit hospice as the chaplain, bereavement and volunteer coordinator, there were lots of games and behind the scenes intrigue, and they tried to work me to death. After a heart attack, I had been back to work three weeks when they fired the brother that covered for me, so I had to take over his two offices, as well as my own, and was forced to drop out of cardiac rehab. The affordable care act cut payments for services and I lost my job, being replaced by two people so they wouldn't have to pay benefits.

So now I pastor a small church, substitute teach, drive squad cars wherever, and like you said, I have time to go to my daughters ball games, school activities, I know their teachers, and their friends. I wish I made more money, but I wouldn't trade the time with my last two bambinos at home for anything, and the Lord does provide, and he will provide for you to brother, time with our families is precious, and can't be replaced. Enjoy your future, and enjoy every minute with those boys, you will never regret that time spent!:D:D

Hah and politics... I hate it but have no choice but to play it. Being in academia, everything is politics. You have to play the game to get funding, to get papers published, to get promoted and to get tenure. In a department, each faculty has his / her own lab. All the complicated politics between senior faculty members, between senior and junior faculty and competition between the young faculty members... Then you have colleagues within a lab. They compete to see who has the better publications and who gets better grants... Then they have to collaborate since they are co-workers... So as a young professor, you have to balance all the different politics. So exhausting...

In my opinion, you will have to play the game no matter where you work. As long as you are happy, that is all it counts. Good luck and have fun!

As promised.

When we went on the 21st the weather was far from optimal (windy/overcast).

F/A-18 Hornet on loan from Pensacola. This bird is turned into a museum piece since the airframe already exceeded the lifespan (probably due to stress from performing).

p.s. The "pilot" in the cockpit is just a mannequin and not, as I assumed upon first glance, an unfortunate museum staff :D.

More photos coming.

I hope things work out for you.But what I can't understand is you are required to work longer hours in a government job than in private enterprise? Myself have had two career choices.......army helicopter pilot,...Police, where to a certain point, politics have influenced my decision to change once again, and join my father , brother, in milking 650 cows and expanding once I've had my cursed hips and other operations next month.
I was on Arcoxia for a long period which worked well for me and it was hard to tell I had a problem before the doc,s took me off it due to complications and put on morphine.
I was on 60mgs a day for four months before I decided to go cold turkey and take myself off it.man it was very hard and sickening but I managed the first three days of hell and succeeded in the end.

Now I really understand how hard it is for those hard drug users to break their dependency.
Anyway I could have had my operation much earlier if I was prepared to pay ,but I decided to wait for a freebie from the state.

I gassed up today for a cool $2.179 a gallon. Some parts of the US are already at $1.99 a gallon or less. I imagine we will be there in 10 days or so.

Gas is dropping fast...Regular unleaded can now be had for less than $2 a gallon at selected stations...
