I'm not sure about that open gap on the right side behind the charging handle where the Upper and Lower meet. Shouldn't there be some sort of dust cover there to prevent ingress of debris? What are the Chinese designers thinking there?

The gap isn't as large as the angle of that image makes it seem, and there is a cover there which moves with the reciprocating charging handle.

There are plentiful pictures over the years of the rifle showing the relevant details.

I'm more surprised you were asking what the designers were thinking rather than first thoroughly reviewing the available imagery?

It passed the dust, sand, water, mud, and more importantly, the yellow river test. The designers knew what they were designing when making this.
