Looks like my speculation was correct the Hunan Handguard is modular

"Modular" for a handguard doesn't mean much, and the patent isn't exactly using the word correctly except for saying that the replacement of the existing plastic handguard is done in a sensible way.

Free float?

Well, it seems like they are keeping the front sight post that has to be physically attached to both the gas block and the handguard, and it looks like the bottom of the handguard has a screw as well, so it doesn't look free floated...

However what's more interesting is that clearly this patent is related to this design we've seen before (below), which clearly doesn't have the gas block front sight post (but uses a front sight post that is attached to the picatinny rail, and this one looks free floated, while also having the overall handguard as a whole be of a similar length to the patent...

I wonder if the patent is of an earlier, less refined version than the one that we've seen in pictures this year, because those ones look much more refined.

Looks like I was right, from Hunan there are some much newer patents for the new handguard...

This one shows a patent for the barrel nut for the newer handguard, where you can see the revised version depicted in the above pictures, and it confirms based on the design (if you read through the patent) that it is free floated and doesn't connect the barrel of the gun and only secures it thoroughly at the barrel nut:

And this patent shows the front folding sight on the pic rail, again depicting the newer handguard

....

And here's a patent for the longer version of the handguard we've seen before

The way they hold the gun with their left hand looks wierd. I know it might provide more stability but it looks unnatural. Maybe they need the pistol forward grip to make it easier to hold with the left hand.

It's just a c clamp grip, pretty standard these days.

These days c clamps look like the standard to me; if anything not having a c clamp looks unnatural now.

The whole christmas tree thing, when applied to China's "end-user environment", means only the SOF and SWAT community would benefit, whereas the general soldiery will stick with whatever issued to them in the standard kit.

Besides, China ain't changing its policy and export their 5.8mm ammo.

Frankly if it's "only" SOF and SWAT that benefits, that would still be quite a decently sized order for the new handguards.
Realistically, we aren't going to see the usual grunts/line units get these, which is perfectly fine.

TBH the most important thing is that they have what is finally a modern free floated handguard option for the QBZ-191.
