I don't know what they will call it ...QBZ-191 ? but for sure all the rifles were changed in the parade, not a QBZ-95 in sight !
I read there are two variants of the QBZ-191, shorter stock version for vehicle crews and longer barrel for infantry.

Plenty of QBZ95 on scene, the honor guard, navy, airforce, 2nd artillery (I flatout refuse to use the "Rocket Force", it sounds silly, reminds me of Team Rocket from Pokemon!), strategic support, logistics as well as the UNPKO formations carried QBZ95; the female soldiers formation called the QBB95; army carried the QBZ03, the reserves carried the Type 81.

The vehicle troops carried the new rifle.

If you want to talk about a rifle model that's absent, that'd be QBZ95-1.

Well numbers game here, QBZ95 was introduced in 1996-1997 for the take over of Hong Kong. The PLA wanted to march triumphantly though the streets of the former British colony and show a modern military.
after that they had the pop up of the QBZ03 then 95-1 appeared in late 2010,
In shows we saw them issued to some units but that’s 13 years behind the 95. And even then it wasn’t going to be fielded until what 2012?
That’s 7 years between then and now. We know that Norinco didn’t make huge changes to the export 97 model, no 97-1. Which would have been logical for them if they were cranking out 95-1 like sausages.
We saw the QST11 for sure in 17 and started hearing about the QBZ191 and saw prototypes off and on post 2010.
QST-11 probably wasn’t cheap to develop.
It seems like what may have happened is the PLA took batches for trails of 95-1 but found them lack luster. I mean it’s an improvement but if the PLA was realizing that accessories were a big deal the 95-1 didn’t have that.
Because of the new ammo they were moving to they had to choose where to put there money. A total new 95-1 that kinda sorta had rails or a cheaper rebarrel of 95.

So they probably took the batches they had kept them in service and told Norinco to rebarrel the 95 for the new ammo finish work on the QST-11 and start work on a conventional rifle. At least that’s my thinking.

There is a Type97 gen2 with flap top made by NORINCO, it's a pretty recent addition I believe. This could be because the foreign market had a demand for a type97 with rails, seeing there are some aftermarket options for it. Also likely is that NORINCO actually made and tested a batch of type95 with rails and decided to sell them after not being selected.

Yes but the critical change to the 95-1 is still lacking. They added the rail system but not the thumb safety selector. That would have demanded changes to both the mold lines of the receiver shell around the pistol grip and tigger pack assemblies both at the grip and in the back of the weapon.
The 97-2 is simply swapping the sight bridge carry Handel and charging Handel otherwise same 97 as before.

Terran empire mentioned its positioning means it could be for bolt release, but I can't really see how it could work. It looks like more of an extension of the mag lever to me.

The confirmed bolt release on the left side is also in an expected/normal position for a bolt release, and I don't see why they would have one on the left side in that position and one on the right side near the mag lever; seems like it would make more sense to have a right side bolt release be in the same position as the left bolt release.

This is my guess. (disclaimer, i'm just an average guy who has fired a few guns here and there. :) ) I think right side bolt release could be handled by a slight pull on the charging handle after the bolt has been locked back on the last round. Since the charging handle is probably already locked back, it's should be a quick flip/pull to release it after inserting a new magazine. It's the same idea as "sling shotting" a locked back pistol slide after inserting a new magazine. Many instructors prefer this method since it only requires gross motor skills.

Hopefully in the near future, there will be a release video that documents the history/development behind this new rifle. It should be interesting to see the internals.
