Because the pictured unit is not a baselined GM, but a GM Sniper from 08th MS Team.I don't get why you need such a massive scope on that gun...
Wouldn't that scope be the size of a main battle tank?
The weapon is a LR Beam Rifle specifically made for the GM Sniper (specially equipped ground GM), it is made to shoot down large objects precisely over long range and is powered by an external power source (usually a base or flagship land vessel such as Big Tray). It cannot be used for dogfights due to its immense size and limited movement range (umbilical cable). The only canonical use of this impracticle unit was to ambush an unarmed transport craft (Kergeren in 08th MS Team). The evolved GM Sniper II had a more freel usable and compact sniper rifle.
Baseline GMs use Beam Spray guns, HFW-GR·MR82-90mm machine guns or NF·GMG-Type.37/100mm machine guns which are small and compact so they can be wielded in one hand allowing the other to hold a shield.
Again, UC is not Gundam Wing, it does not sport twin buster rifles/BFGs on mainstay atmospheric forces. There are large weapons, bu hose usually hinder mobility accordingly.
-08th MS Team's cannons require a support for precise fire under normal conditions.
-Marmot force's cannons required to be fired prone and were given up upon enemy contact (you don't carry that around in a dogfight).
-Bazookas in general are only use against MS when the pilot is really confident that he can hit. Otherwise its mainly used vs flagships or bases.
Space forces may use cannons as large as they want (up to hi mega launcher of type-100/hyaku shiki) simply because its 0-G.
