one of those rare occasions where American media actually got things right about China...

I disagree. The World media gets a lot of things right about China. The problem is that many Chinese and China watchers don't recieve criticism very well. Not at all. Just my opinion.

I've become like that myself. I think it's because so much criticism of China is unwarranted, and so often misconceptions and egoistic interest are underlying. There's lots of problems with China, sure, and many journalists point to the right ones at the right times. But when that happens, one is fast to challenge that reporting to see if the writer really knows what he's talking about and if he came to the right conclusion on the right terms, and not just jumped on some bandwagon.

Or it is simply weakness.

And to be honest, most of the Americans I've met over the years have been hostile to criticism of the US. Especially from Europeans like me.

there are only a few international sources i trust on China and they are not even in English. the way that the press so easily bought into the allegation of Hu losing control of the military is a testament to their lack of knowledge about CCP's doctrines and internal workings. they dont seem to understand the implication of such allegation other than changes in foreign policy, simply because that's what Obama had experienced during his formulation on afghan policy. so they are just projecting the American image on China and its obviously not gonna work

^^^ They (western media) were just expressing an opinion. Albeit wrong. Why? They don't have inside information. Because the CCP , as you know, is a very closed club.

there certainly are lots of stuff that people dont have access to. but common sense should be enough to discern whether a report on China is accurate. still using the gates allegation as an example, the fact that the media just took for granted what Gates has said (and even i think misunderstood what he said) means that nobody really understood CCP's view on control over the military...it simply would not accept loss of control over the military. and this stuff is not some ultra top secret that is inaccessible to anybody, the media just didnt look hard enough. though i cant really blame them, nowadays you dont really have time to verify a news story because information travel so fast.

Took some time to read from Jan to Jun of this topic.

Some (personal) summary:

1. The guy who's in PLA uniform who have an "unfitted" face during the airport ceremony - guys, think WILD, he maybe the one holding "football" for Hu. (Or maybe NATO have a different codename for it? like "Ping Pang Ball"?)

2. It has been formally reported that American PR company(s) has been bitting for that "ad" project. So, I guess the American PR still not working for most of us? Find a whole bunch of guys, line them up, show some subtitle like 1.5s, and next batch... and expact people to remember "they are representing the best that China can give to the world"???? I mean, I am a patriotic Chinese Citizen, I call that STUPID, on top of anything else. I read news relatively more frequent than my peers, and I can (only) call out some of the character's names, not all. So the point is to let American people to remember "faceless" prestigious people of China? (If you line up all the American Presidents in a 60 second show, unless they have scar on face or something, or as "distinctive" as Lincoln...they are "faceless" to me. )

3. Regarding the "anti-American Song" during the state dinner thing. SDF is a first class forum with first class mods, so you guys is likely "not familiar" why the hell people got interest / zealous about this kind of BS? - Please heed this: THERE ARE PAID NETIZENS, who "start topics" intentionally, to mess up their targeted audiences. And THERE ARE PAID NETIZENS, who "follow up" the topics, to "make it looks real" to the other netizens, regarding the otherwise BS topics.

Mess up China-USA civilian-emotional-opinion (let's face it, every opinion is "emotional") on each other, IS THIS TOPICS target.

4. Besides the "China's big boss don't have his own plane (when travel to another country)", you guys forget the fact that arguably, US president is THE ONLY ONE, who tooks the whole cav with him (his Halo, his car, his attache's fleet of cars, his double Air-Force-One... on top of Air-Force-One), when he travel to another county(did he brought along his own cooks?). So, yes, China's president do not have his own plane is abnormal (among P5 of the UN); but no, it is normal, to NOT TO took the whole cav with him, when he is travelling to another country.

"6月12日胡主席已经抵达阿斯塔那,开始对哈萨克斯坦进行国事访问,并出席定于15日举行的上海合作组织成立10周年峰会。哈萨克斯坦总统纳扎尔耶夫亲自到机场欢迎胡主席和夫人刘永清一行。"

Found an intersting thing of some-what related to this topic (since some of you already start the "humor")

The above reads: bla bla bla... "to welcome President (Chairman) Hu and first laday Liu Yongqing"...

It shows:

1. There is no such thing "Mrs. Hu" in official (and actually in normal Chinese practices, also) title. Mainland China, in distinguish from the "old China", have a MORE THROUGH, Female Liberty or feminism, than many other "free world". Female is not to be %%%'s, they are their own, marriage do not strip their family / maiden name. - This is a huge liberty, if you know some Chinese history. - To address her instead of full name, in Chinese, "Miss Liu" is more proper than "Mrs Hu".

2. Almost the same thing but different aspect, There is no "Husband name + Maiden name + Given name" like what INVENTED at Hongkong / Taiwan nowadays, in Chinese common practices. Equall social identity = Equal naming = A woman's full name starts with her own Maiden name + nothing to do with husband.
