Xinhua net report

Basically it says the launch system has recently been successfully tested. All 9 missiles hit the targets. The project started in 2003 and took 8 years. The team has been given a price in late 2010.

Mk 41... as in Mk 41 VLS?

Are they talking about a new common VLS or something?

Intruiging if true. We might see this thing on the 052C follow up, given the timing.

PLAN definitely needs VLS/missile commonality.

If true, we will not see it on a vessel for some time yet. But then, when they do, it will be common to most vessels with VLS. A lot of 054As, the existing 052Cs will have the old tech. It will be interesting to see if they were built with the idea and intention to upgrade.

The US did that with the Spruance class once the VLS came along.

We'll see if the PLAN goes back and upgrades all of these ships they have already built...most of them are certainly new enough that over the course of their service life having the common system would make sense if they can do it.

This is great news for the PLAN as this new technology will be able to narrow the gap between PLAN and Western navies. What a fantastic year it has been so far!

By the timeframe that won't be the VLS system on 054 FFG, but while the report indicate system adopted the way of commonality architecture, common firing control, common protocols and so on in terms of hardware and software spectrums, the report said nothing about what type of missiles fired and what kind of scenarios the test simulates.
Of course the article said nothing whether this system adopts the hot-launch or cold-launch system, and any backward compatibility...while that's no problem with upcoming weapon systems that could design with its specs in mind, what about the current munitions? Could some be adopted with modifications?
Nonetheless, it's a correct direction in development.

Where is this New VLS tested? on land?

I am wondering how come this is not on the Bi Sheng Weapon Trial Ships yet?

Well we only saw the HQ-10/Sino RAM on the test ship around the same time it was installed on the Varyag.

And maybe it already is installed, but being a VLS it's harder to spot?
