These ships are supremely important for any operations in the South China Sea. Much more relevant than the over the horizon attack LCAC ships which are mostly for spec ops.
Those are much more limited in terms of delivered cargo or even easy of deployment of troops and equipment direct to shore.

LCAC are used to provide intermediate personnel/material transport between the larger transport ships and ashore. Type 72s are bassically medium cargo ships. You can compare the two.

I dug up more images of what I identify as the Type 072's interior;

In the three photos posted, if it's difficult to recognize the same pattern of the walls or the ceiling, you can see that all three have those tubes at the foot of the walls.
