PLAN Type 051B/C Class Destroyers

I don't know if you need to replace the 100mm for the 76mm, as the Type 051B kept its. The Type 363 radar can be changed to the Type 382 Sea Eagle, but I am not completely sure how much you can gain from that. The Type 382 is not necessary for the operation of the HQ-16. The radar near the funnel is the Type 364, and this remains the same on the upgraded vessel. Assuming you change the Type 363 to the Type 382 on top of the mast, this does not amount to a structural change on the ship. But in my opinion, updating the back end of the Type 363 would suffice. The Type 051B changed to the Type 382 for its main radar, but then the Type 360S itself on the 051B is an old radar even compared to the Type 363 which appears to be its replacement. If the Type 382 outperforms the Type 363 to a significant margin, maybe that is a good consideration for changing but I don't have the numbers. The Type 344 fire control radar for the guns remains.

I take it back. Type 382 probably has more than double the detection range of the Type 363 (250km? vs. 110km) and much higher peak power (100kw vs. 60kw). That must make it a required upgrade.

I would sell the old 054 to Pakistan or Bangladesh or ASEAN countries or African countries ... mate rate ;)

There is really no point to upgrade old 054 .. better just order 2 extra 054A or B for navy

There is little need to get rid of those 054s prematurely.

With the rate the PLAN is inducting 054As, I would not be surprised if those 054s are serving as full time training ships to get crews ready ASAP for new built 054As.

Also, isn’t this the wrong thread for 054 talk?

I would focus on the 053H3s first. :p

These are now serving in a corvette like role that supplement the 056s. With 8 ASMs, two Type 730s, an HQ-10 launcher, and a hanger for the helicopter, and two 100mm guns, they are also better armed. What's interesting is that they retained their Type 517 long wave radars, which can be used to spot stealthy aircraft.

I wonder if any earlier Type 054As later retrofitted their 730s to 1130s, and then second hand 730s are passed on to the 053H3s.

Did they took out the towed array on the 167? It appears they might have done so. My guess was that the ship's relatively noisy steam power plants degrades the performance of the towed array, that it was pointless to keep it.

Henry K agrees with you: the towed array seems to be gone (

I thought only one 053H so far has received a refurb with HQ-10 and 730s? Have they decided to do this to all remaining vessels?

Given that even the oldest 053H3 has at least another decade to run, it would make sense to upgrade all of them.

Less clear is the matter of the 053H1Gs...
