Why is the refit based on the Type 054A sensors and systems ? Why not give this ship an AESA radar. I don't know if its possible to fit a VLS system on the Type 051B.

If I'm not mistaken, the 051B has retractable HQ-7 reloader behind the HQ-7 SAM unit. So in terms of below-deck penetration there's already space allocated to reloader and missile storage. Refitting it with VLS system is prolly not difficult.

AESA systems are quite expensive and require even more major rework on the ship (structural, power requirements, etc). The HQ-16 VLS is at least better upgrade than HQ-10.

Or install both HQ-16 for medium ranged SAM and HQ-10 for short ranged SAM, that would be better upgrade. I wouldn't think HQ-10 SAM system is terribly expensive.

The mast looks pretty thick, wider then type 054A and maybe C28A's. Wonder if 051b would get a more advanced rotating radar down the line. Like the ones still being tested.

What's that hose? In the middle of UNREP?

Not sure, but if it was UNREP, there'd be sailors on deck.

It is UNREP, in a sense, it's astern refuelling though, not alongside refuelling.

There is a refuelling or replenishment ship forward of the ship in this case, towing a fuel line where the destroyer picks it up and uses it to refuel. We can see the fuel line in front of it in the water, it's a black line.

This is correct.
An effective way to RAS(Refuel At Sea) when the ocean is raw.
Also when 3 ships in a tense zone needs refuel fast.
However its more dangerous and the fuel line is floating.
Also needs extreme carefull navigation skills and constant contact with the givership from the receivingship
