Btw exactly how many Yuan class subs does the PLAN operate at this moment. It seems to me that 12-13 would be a small underestimation.

I think 13 is the current number. Not an underestimation.

I believe I have read that the PLAN is going to build a total of twenty...but I am not sure if that is official.

The last general feeling was for 13 minimum maybe now one in more.

Guys I'm fairly confused about the designations of the different batches/variants of Song and Yuan (and the Shang as well). And is the latest variant we've seen designated 039B or 039C? I'd appreciate if someone could clarify these for me. Are these official designations? if not, are the official designations known?

039 class/ NATO code :Song class - Only 1 boat built, with distinctive step sail.
039G class/ NATO code Song class - improved variant of 039 class - 12 boats built.
039A class/ NATO code Yuan class
039B class/ NATO code ???? - latest variant first showed up in April 2014.

Is there any reliable estimates on how well these compare to the latest Russian Kilo variants?? I know sub's are also difficult to compare, but is there any publicly available info on acoustic performance of the latest gen of Kilo vs 039B's?
