China controls many submerged reefs in the Spratly Islands but no islands. Would it nevertheless be feasible for China to build an airport on one of the reefs through land reclamation? Malaysia, the Philippines, and China (Woody Island) have all built runways on tiny islands by building up the reef.
By the way, Google Earth has a new image of Woody Island in the Paracel Islands. It was taken 27 June 2012, six months after the previous picture. The most noticeable change is that the new, third harbor has been almost completely dredged. The only remaining parts are pointless because all the dock space has been cleared and there is plenty of room to maneuver inside the harbor.

The new Sanya naval base where the Liaoning is currently docked also has a new image from 10 June 2013. It shows the carrier pier is 95% complete while a new pier is nearly finished to the north of the big carrier pier.
