The Trimaren seems more stable than a mono hull vessel. In addition there is room for a helicopter hanger. Probably very cost effective to construct a smaller vessel with a large deck area. Does anyone know if it is cheaper and/or easier to construct?
Lots of good reasons for such ships.
They are quite a bit larger than the PLAN test vessel shown, but the US is, of course, building trimaren littoral combat ships. Three are already built, a fourth and fifth are building, and the US, with the Independence Class LCS, is going to build 16 of them.
They have large landing pads and large hanger spaces, with also a large mission space beneath the pad.

These boats appear not much bigger than Type 022s. What can their primary mission be assuming they are fast but light with a helipad? SAR? River patrol? Anti-sub?

You can land a helicopter on it, but I seriously doubt this thing will have the means to do more than refuel the helo. Can't see anywhere where munitions or service equipment might be housed to allow it to do more.
If I was to guess, I would say that this is a mission module test bed, potentially as a stepping stone to a Chinese LCS equivalent. That's the best reason I can think of for having the big cut out doors at the back go so low down - to give the mission equipment easier access to the water.

close. If its a "Counter diver" then its intended to be deployed around ports and used a portable Pier allowing friendly divers and Unmanned submerged crafts to deploy off her deck and look for signs of sabotage. Personal I think its just a proof of concept for that Trimaran hull configuration. The PLAN Would be foolish not to at least look into it.
