Jeff, I don't want to belabour this point too much -- personally I do not have too strong an opinion regarding whether he was deliberately being inflammatory or not -- but the fact that a few members did criticize the wording of his question clearly meant his question could be, and was, interpreted in a certain way.
The speaker often has no control as to how listeners interpret their words, and the interpretation of those words is not a "choice," but rather a product of their own worldview developed throughout their life and their interactions with the environment.
Blackstone may not have meant to ask his question in a way which would have elicited a response... which is justified and fine. But other members who interpreted his words differently and called him out on it were also justified in their interpretation and their subsequent criticism... is all I'm saying.
