I know that. That's why I said " in rare instances ".

I was specifically referring to the words "dangerous, stay away". Would that come out the same when expressed in Japanese writing? Most probably not, but I was just asking out of curiosity.

Everyone is attempting to develop such a weapon. The UK may be the leader in the field, having shot down some attacking Argentine Dagger ground attack aircraft ( Israeli made Mirage copies ) over the Falklands using a crude laser weapon. I have seen the actual weapon on a Type 42 destroyer. Where they have gone with laser weaponry since 1982 is anyone's guess.

For serious firepower a neutral particle beam is much more effective, although the energy generation cost is higher.

I did a little research on that and found that they were laser dazzlers, so if they did bring any aircraft down, it was because of blinding the pilots and possibly the instruments. I haven't even heard that any of the Argentine aircraft we're downed as a result of laser blinding, and I have researched the breakdown of aircraft kills in the Falklands before. Either way the lasers didn't actually shoot down the aircraft.

I'd also like to add that when it comes to lasers that actually make things go boom, the US is certainly more advanced than anyone else, followed by probably the Israelis.

Wonder whether the LASER dazzler on the Type-99 Tanks have a similar function?

The THEL is just one of several systems that the US is working on, and there are most likely others that are not know to the public.

As I understand it, the dazzler on the Type 99 is more used to blind the optics on enemy tanks.

I wouldn't be too surprised if most major powers in the world were pursuing future weapons like high energy lasers, rail guns etc that they're not telling the world. But the US is definitely the leader in this field, having put a laser on a freaking 747.

I think the Type 99's laser dazzler can also be used to attack a helicopters as well (so maybe they'll blind the pilots and make them crash LOL).

The system comprises a laser warning receiver (LWR) and an box-shape active laser self-defence weapon (LSDW), which was designed to use high-powered laser to attack the enemy weapon's optics and gunner.
The LSDW can disrupt the laser/infrared guidance signal of the enemy missile, disable the enemy observation optics (optical, night vision, thermal imager, laser rangefinder, etc.), and damage the eyesight of the enemy gunner. Photos of the Type 99 showed that the LSDW can be elevated to a higher angle than the tank's main gun, indicating that the engagement of attack helicopters is possible.

There's a post on the IMINT blog by Sean O Connor of the various Chinese (potential) laser sites, especially the ASAT ones. Whether they're only capable of just blinding satellites or causing physical damage remains to be seen though.
