Re: Latest Varyag Pics

Theres, an easy way to verify. If we can find another picture of the ship form the exact same angle and quality, than its probably PS. If not, that does not mean it is not a PS, but it is less likely to be one.

I would say PS ... .... That plane on the deck is in primer. Something I would think unlikely. I could be wrong, but I just do see them using an plane in primer!!

After some blown-up analysis, I the aircraft bears a resemblance the the eurofighter. It certainly isnt a j-10. It also could be an l-15. The top of this aircrafts rear fin is black, and so is the top of the l-15s fin. Limited resemblence to an su-27 exists.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

I thought measuring the length propotions could prove the photo a fake but I cannot say so from the result i got. From that angle I am getting the ratio of the lengths of aircraft:ship = 31/493 = 0.063. From Wikipedia, Varyag = 300m and J-10 = 14.57. That ratio = 0.048. Now that I could not locate the beginning and end of the aircraft correctly from that photo, the ratios are not that far out.

Excellent break down of the pics swimmer! Excellent! I saw that same pic at;

I thought it looked like the same old Varyag pic we've been staring at for over a year...I assumed it was "PS" from the start.

If the pic were true why would the PLAN lift a aircraft on an Cv during a major re-fit? They could do the same expermints with a model..

The next thing we will see "PSed" on that ship is radars and a mast...

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

I am not sure if this adds anything…except that I can say that the ship was there on 6 December 2005 – pic (taken at some distance I’m afraid) follows shortly once I get it reduced in size to fit the forum specs. In fact I had forgotten the thing was in Dalian when I was taking general pics of the port….and only spotted it in the photo several weeks later :(

I have to say that if the PLAN were trying to develop this for some sort of real use, why park it in a very open port where all and sundry (including anyone on a passing foreign merchant vessel and there are plenty) can take pics of it ?

So either it is no big deal, or it is some form of crafty "disinformatsia", to use an old Soviet term…i.e. it is there TO BE SEEN and get folk intrigued ?

My guess is that there is an element of disinformation in it...probably regarding the long-term intent and aspirations of the PLAN with respect to aircraft carriers.

Having said that, there are also very few if any places the PLAN could hide either development of a full-size carrier, or the refitting of one. The US, which employs much more advanced technology, makes no real secret of the building, outfitting, and refitting of their nuclear, super-carriers. They are done in ports where it is fairly easy to see. I was in Bremeton, WA last week and saw the John Stennis there being worked on. Here's a pic from an earlier trip:

The Chinese have spent a lot of time, effort, and money on the Varyag. I believe they intend to make her operational, probably as a training carrier that will be outfitted enough to augment whatever they ultimately produce on their own.
