First off Croq. I don't think those are holes in the flight deck. I don't know what it is. I posted about this in another thread. But If they are holes they are certianly too small to lower and propulsion plant through. That would be done in the hangar deck....
Popeye, I agree. But I was not commenting on the holes, just on the painting of the island.

I'm tellin' you right now security must be real tight in the PRC because all we see are these same old crusty, dusty pics we have been seeing for the last year or more..:( .. I guess that's how the PRC operates though....Too bad we can't get any pics like this...I can of course dream.
Agfain, I agree. But we have seen some progress over the years in what is happening with the Varyag. One thing is for sure, they are completely uncomfortable with allowing anything like what you see on the US carriers. CVN 77 is coming along nicely. She is going to be a beuaty and the last of the NImitz class, although going quite a bit towards being a bridge to the new class. CVN-78 already had first metal cut and I expect we shall see her in the yards pretty soon.

AI=American Idol?? Believe it or not I have never ever seen that show. And have no intention of watching it on pourpose.

Anyway could 48 Su-27 fit on the Varyag? I think it would be way to conjested. Creating a danger for an unskilled crew...No slight intended to the PLAN.. Or do you mean 48 aircraft with 36 on board and 12 in reserve for training?
yeah.

I'm not saying putting 48 on Varyag. 24 maybe? The other regiment will be based on shore and used as a strike aircraft. They can be used to replace the ones on Varyag. They also could be used for a future carrier. My opinion is that China will eventually have a carrier per fleet, so at least 75 carrier fighters are needed.

I think closer to 30. But also believe that the Chinese plan on building several carriers. If they intend to have one available in both fleets constantly (meaning two carriers available at all times), then due to maintenance and overhaul concerns through the years, they will end up building 3-4 carriers so they can rotate them through.

They would have to buy the SU-33 mods from the Russians, or at least buy the design rights from them and then make the changes themselves. On the J-10, they would have to make those changes themselves, or hire contract engineers from somewhere else, like Russia, to come in and do it. I know the Chinese have been looking hard at air shows in Russia and talking with them about the SU-33 type mods.

Keel laying is set for next year for CVN-78.:)

As for the Varyag. I will say it again..A ship is not in the shipyard for almost 4years for nothing. Trust me. So something is being done to the ship. We all will have to wait and see the final result.

I really don't think the PRC has anything to fear about their CV program. I mean what secrects could they possibly hide from the US or any other potential advesary? Come on PLAN come clean..What's up with the Varyag!? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

I really think PLAN should begin telling the truth about Varyag now. Like BD Popeye said,

I personally believe that PLAN is converting Varyag for military purposes. Like Migleader said "who else has the right to paint varyag in navy grey."

I think China is declining their contruction of aircraft carriers just to avoid "trouble" from other nations. They do not want to viewed as a threat.

PLABUDDY, Dude you hit the nail on the head!

Just tell the truth PRC. The PRC should not worry about what old Rummy and other nations may think. They have the right to arm themselves as they see fit...The Japanese have those LST's and is building those DDH(LPH) type ships..And S. Korea is building 4 (I think) LPX ships....So now it appears that the PRC may be re-fitting an old Russian CV for it's own pourpose..That's their business. The do have to protect 1,300,000,000 people.

it dependes on when china plans to start operating it's carrier. If its soon, the su-33kub is the best choice. almost not real trials would be needed since the fighter can operate off of varyag without modifications.

Developing a navla j-10 is more difficult than simply strapping another enigne on the plane. New weapons and controls need to be mad,e and severe modifications to the airframe are needed. CAC may already be looking at a two-seater design right now, but its years from flying.

well, I think the perception out there is that China will face a lot of heat for re-fitting Varyag. Which they already are. The rumour on Chinese forum is that Bush told Hu Jintao that "he is very concerned about China building a carrier and that it could seriously hurt sino-American relationship".
