Taiwanese - Japanese (taiwanese breefing, I think, by satellite photos)
sorry, I dont know

edit: reportet in CDF
Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) -- China is developing an aircraft carrier battle group, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Thursday.

The ministry unveiled 20 satellite photos to back up its claim and expose China's military deployment posture.

Pointing at a satellite photo, MND spokesman Liu Chih-chien said the Vayag, an aircraft carrier China bought from Ukraine, has been under repair at a dock in Dalian, Liaoning. "Although China claimed that the Vayag will be used as a tourist attraction, the aircraft carrier would actually be used as a training ship in preparation for building up an aircraft carrier battle group," Liu said.

Once its aircraft carrier battle group takes shape, Liu said, China will be able to launch offshore attack on Taiwan's eastern part......
may be, they are just spreading enough fear so that the 10-20 billion dollar arms purchase bill will pass their congress.

sorry for doubble posting, but I cant added this pic at the last posting

Could us non-Chinese reading members have a translation of the script on that photo? The photo looks somewhat sensored because of that mint green on the flight deck. Does not look right to me. I could be wrong.

Could someone post a link about the ROC "spy" sattlite pics in English?
Thanks!!!

....Taiwan's military is moving in a similar direction. It hopes to launch the ROCSAT-3 by 2005. Analysts believe this will have military spying capabilities, although it is officially described as being for scientific and civilian use. Taipei's programme has also been delayed by diplomatic interference from China. Pressure was put on Germany to refuse approval for a company to build Taiwan's second satellite - the ROCSAT-2. This is now being built in France and is expected to be launched in 2003.
"The Taiwanese military is trying to get as close to real-time satellite imagery as possible," said Andrew Yang Nien-dzu, secretary-general of the Taipei-based Chinese Council for Advanced Policy Studies. Washington provided copies of photos showing PLA movements in areas considered of interest to Taiwan, such as Fujian and Guangdong provinces, said Mr Yang. But the sharing of intelligence was on a case-by-case basis, and there was no formal mechanism for Taiwan to seek access to the sensitive imagery, he said. ...

Taiwan plans to launch a spy satellite costing $US300 million ($394.17 million) as a result of China’s continued hostility towards the island, a newspaper reported today.
The satellite would be able to send clear photographs of areas less than 1sq m in size, the United Daily News said.
Taiwan now operates a research satellite designed to send photos of areas as small as 2sq m, which Beijing says it fears could be used for military purposes.
But Taipei insists the satellite, called Formosa II, which was launched in May in the US, only monitors the island’s land mass and surrounding waters and studies atmospheric conditions.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

Thanks Sczepan. I'm not at all surprised by the US helping the ROC with this spy sattlite technology. No telling what other closed door dealings are being done between the US and ROC.

Any ideas why the flight deck of the Varyag has that mint green color? I've never seen that on the outside of a ship before. I'm puzzled by that pic..Anyone care to speculate?

no perfect idea, but
1) it seems psed (wrong colour) to get clear contrastings
(the central part of Varjag is conrastet by an red line)
2) its clearly no catapulte at the angled deck

Seems to me that someone shaded/highlighted that area of the deck popeye, using some graphics program to make some point or another. I do not believe it is the actual deck painting.

It's really hard to tell. But closer inspection shows you may just be right, Jeff. I'm hoping we get some newer, more recent pictures of this carrier so we can try and determine what stage they are at in building it for operational use, or for something else.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

I've compared two aerial photos of the Varyag, one taken from satellite and the other from a plane. The plane picture is photographed around 02 since in the photo the large complex that the Varyag now lie moored at is not yet finished

. The other photo have been posted in this forum, its the photo with the green color on the deck of the Varyag http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=153&d=1137790732.

On the photos something didn't add up and I took a closer look.
Notice in the aerial photo how there is a small ;) squared hole in the deck straight ut from the tower on the port (?) side (left) of the ship.
Now look at the satellite photo with the Varyags deck in Winter Green Mint color and notice how that "small" hole now is a "Big" upside down fat L shaped thing. Based on the 02 photo you can se the orignal small hole as the small underline of an L.
Another interesting thing is that the hole is located slighly to the port side of the ships keel, the place for an engine. (?)

Conclusions everbody?

Kinda makes sense...They cut a hole in the deck to have crane instal the engine. The thing is, when did they cut the hole?
