Ladies and Gents - I'm not a photo expert but if that is smoke coming from the Varyag, it ain't coming from the stack. In my opinion, a LOT of the buildings in those pics are putting out smoke from their heating systems or perhaps another ship is belching off in the distance. Smoke does not look like it's coming from the V... BTW - does the V have a Chinese name yet??
I agree with PLAbuddy - that smoke is not engine smoke from the V's stack as it is in the wrong place

I would guess that the Varag would probably be named "Mao"...... :coffee:
Well the people in there need some heat to work in, the temperture in Dalian must be freezing... OR it could be the cook making food for the workers....

China wanted to use the Varyag as an aircraft carrier when they purchased her. However, China gave up this idea because of time that PLAN lost and reasons caused by international pressure. Another idea that China purchased the carrier to use it for research is somehow a part of this idea. Actually this is not valid solely.
China got an unforseen chance with the unexpected interest of the international media and public opinion. Presence and mystery of the Varyag is a cost-effective way that cause maximum intimidation against unsinkable aircraft carrier Taiwan.

personally, the plan simply wanted varyag to have a full scale model they could work with and test. i dont see it actually serving in service. it is not a modern carrier design. china would probably lean towrds something more charles de gaulle like.

While I agree, they probably won't use Varyag as an operational carrier (warship certified), I think they may use it as a 'training' carrier. It would be big and expensive to operate. But the ship is mostly built and can be used to gain operational experience. I'm still wondering about that "floating casino" stuff.....

1. the macao company chin lot that originally bought varyag is now out of business
2. They did now have gambling liscence at the time of purhcase, and never got one.
3. the waters around Macao are too shallow to accomadate Varyag
4. several chin lot senior officials had connectiosn with the PLA. Dalian/PLAN(or whoever owns it) never officially announced a purchases of varyag, leading to rumors that these officials had signed over Varyag when the company went out of business.
