China's first carriar is rumored to be completed by 2010. The Airwing would probably be Jian-10s,Jian-8IIs,Jian-11s,and possibaly,Su-33s if China obtains them from Russia. The Varyag will probably serve as a test carrier to see if these aircraft are capable for this kind of takeoff. China's new carrier will probably have a Ski-jump like the Varyag.

I've been a member of this forum and the old one since April of this year. I've read so many rumours about the "mystical" PLAN CV and plans to build one. But yet no one Has offered any real , concrete proof that the PLAN is building an indeginous CV. And all talk about the Varyag is pure speculation on our part. At least with the Varyag there is some evidence that it may, someday be an operational CV for the PLAN.

Honestly I'm tired of these "wet dreams". Until the PRC offically announces that a CV is ready to go to see will we China lovers and watchers can only dream of the day whem the PLAN puts to sea a real operational CV.

That day when the CV finally takes to sea be glorious for the PRC:china:

I, an old USN sailor, am looking foward to that!:)

building a aircraft carrier is going to be impossible to hide.. pics of it (if they start building one) will starting to appear on the internet very fast. ACs are huge, it's not like the Yuan sub where u can just build it in a enclosed space.. these things take up city blocks.. there's no where to hide.. and it takes years to build them.. so a 2010 deadline is kinda too soon. it's already almost 2006. considering the experience china have with AC building (0). it will definitly take them a few trial and errors even in the building stage.. so got some extra time to the building. considering for USA to build a AC, (with 60 yrs of experience). it still takes many years.. i can't see how china can finish a new one by 2010. upgrade varyag maybe.. even that will take years.

I agree PiSigma. Impossible to hide but not to build. It does take a lot of time to build a Nimitz class CVN. It takes two years just to cut the steel and seven more years to build...A difficult task but not impossible for the PRC.

This is one of the facts that China did not buil a CV earlier. PLAN is not the largest navy in the world so China really does not have enough ships to protect a carrier while having more back in mainland (you know, a CV battle group needs a large fleet of ships and subs). The Chinese did not have the technology to build Early Warining Aircraft which is a must have for all modern Aircraft Carriers so the Chinese did not put much effort into studying Aircraft Carrier Technology. Most of these gaps have already been fixed though. I do doubt the Varyag is going to actually join the PLAN, I do believe China is very determined to build an Aircraft Carrier, China has not only purchased the Varyag but also the Kiev from Russia for research. The contract requried the Kiev be scrapped after this but was later renegotiated so that the Kiev shall become a tourest attraction. Right now, I really do not see why China cant build an Aircraft Carrier. So that so called dream could actcually become an reality. I seriously do not believe if China is building a CV now, they will actually alow someone to see it like the Varyag. According to one Russian report, China plans to build an aircraft carrier with a displacement of between 40,000 to 60,000 tons. The feasibility study and draft design of China's aircraft carrier started in 1992. According to Russian sources, China began work on its own carrier in 2005 at Shanghai Shipyard. This carrier, code named "9985 plan" or "Project 9935," would have a 48,000 ton displacement, capable of carrying 30-40 fighter jets, most of which would be multi-functional SU-30MKK jets bought from Russia. The first carrier of purely Chinese design, the ship could have a built-in vertical anti-air and anti-ship missile launching system. China had reportedly started work on naval bases and harbors in Shanghai, Zanjiang and Dalian to improve docking facilities for this carrier. The PRC is very secretive about new developments so right now, there is no right or wrong to China's CV development.

We shall see. If this is true, then they will not be able to hide this at all. It will be readily apparant to visitors to Shanghai and to those flying over it, particularly US satellites.

On the other hand, we do have the Varyag, which we know has been worked on by the PLAN for the last several years and is looking better and better as the months progress.

I believe the first PLAN carrier will be the Varyag, and that while it is training PLAN pilots and naval personnel, the PLAN will then build its indigenous carrier, which they may have already started. If they have, very soon, within months, photos will begin coming out obviously showing a carrier building in Shanghai .

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

that 9985 has nothing to with reality, sorry. Those figures are far too unrealistic and olny one source claimed this (tougth it was rather higly praised FAS)...I believe that it was a hoax or something like that...

that 9985 was a speculation in CMF, as I remember right one of the members told, he himself createt this programme as his idea, what could be done ....
- I've doubt about a carrier-programm build in shanghai; its not so realistic to build a carrier in the harbour there and nobody will make some pix

I am terribly sorry for not seeing this before, but as I havent been here for about 1 month, I guess it exaplanes it all.

Anyway, I did notice something interesting on one of the pic.

varyagcrane6ng.jpg

This crane looks pretty solid and stable. Could it have been used for installing and engine?

Oh, and where is this picture taken?

The background sure doesnt look like Dalian too me...sure this aint a picture of Kuznetsov beeing refitted in the Kola Pennisula? Does Varyag even have the same phased array radar system (one on each side of the Island) as Kuznetsov has....?

Yes that crane can be used to lift and instal an engine or even lift aircraft but is that the Varyag? This does not look like Dalian Ship yard.
