Re: Aircraft Carriers II

This is one of my favorite pics when it comes to Naval Power and the US Navy.

Not one of these 40,000 ton+ vessels is considered an "Aircraft Carrier" in the United States Navy, yet in a Sea Control Carrier mode, each one of them could carry 24 VSTOL aircraft for carrier operations.

In addition to the 11 nuclear aircraft carriers, the US Navy currently has 10 of these vessels. And with 22 Ticonderoga Class AEGIS cruisers, 62 Arleigh Burke Class AEGIS destroyers, and 40 Los Angeles Class and 10 Virginia Class SSNs, the US Navy has plenty of vessels to escort them.

Whoa! I've been gone for a week and now there's a LHD-type object and possibly a carrier under construction.

The real question here is: is

If not, then it is reasonable to conclude that a LHD might be under construction at Jiangnan, which is the suspected shipyard of the LHD, and the carrier-type object might represent an ongoing project at Dalian, the suspected shipyard of the 001A or 002. However, if they are the same, then they might simply represent a scaled down conceptual mockup of an aircraft carrier since the EMALS trough does not conform with any LHD we have seen.

However, there is substantial talk on the internet that the carrier-type module shown at Dalian is actually part of a conceptual mockup, not the actual carrier, and competition between the companies has yet to start.

North Arabian Gulf (Apr. 20, 2003) The amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) moves into position as the amphibious assault ships of Commander, Task Force Fifty One (CTF-51) come together in an unprecedented formation during operations in the North Arabian Gulf. This marked the first time that six large deck amphibious ships from the East and West coasts have deployed together in one area of operation. Led by the flag ship USS Tarawa (LHA 1), the ships in the second row from bottom to top are USS Saipan (LHA 2) and USS Kearsarge (LHD 3); and the third row of ships are USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Bataan (LHD 5) and USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6). CTF-51 led Navy amphibious forces in the Arabian Gulf region during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 32 ships of CTF-51 composed the largest amphibious force assembled since the Inchon landing, during the Korean War. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the multinational coalition effort to liberate the Iraqi people, eliminate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and end the regime of Saddam Hussein. is it just me or the module laying on the shipyard appears to have a much smaller 'hanger' opening than the one of the module by itself?

From my non expert observation, seeing cutaways of LHDs and carriers and others, from the first pic that came out with the bow still missing, I thought that was pretty far up the ship for a hangar. Maybe it's not a hangar for aircraft. If it's not a carrier, maybe it's for armored vehicles to load onto LCACs.

I thought that "carrier module" with the alleged catapult trench was in Shanghai? (GE certainly thinks it is).

It is in shanghai I think. And there is only one module, the aerial pic of JNCX with the supposed carrier nearly complete is an optical illusion it seems

Then it is likely a conceptual mockup that will take part in the yet-to-be-started competition between the shipyards.

Though if the module has been sitting there since March (I'm presuming that the photo was taken recently), why would the PLAN let it just sit there instead of moving it to a military facility for evaluation?
