PLAN Carrier Construction

I think once PLAN really get their sealegs together for carrier operations, the pace will increase dramatically. I think we're just impatient seeing the same old 2 or 3 yellow primer birds on her deck.
Maybe they can shock us by releasing pictures of a full squadron or two of J-15s on her next time. One can only hope LOL

I would expect 4-12 LRIP birds to be trapped as the next voyage or two begins, given all the "blowback" on this forum and others about the "yellow birds", it wouldn't surprise me to see the plan blow some grey-pigment onto the yellow birds and even change their numbers in the process, as the PLANAF is very much aware of public comments. I like the yellow birds, I think they are reflective of where we are in this process, and I have cautioned since very early on, that the PLAN would NOT ramp up to the frenetic pace of the USN, in fact the USN is "throttling back", due to sequestration and the inevitable budget cuts, as Obamacare continues to "throttle back" the private sector economy. So, the PLAN is being very cautious with their only operable aircraft carrier, as master delft notes the construction of indigenous 1 and 2 could be quicker than we expect, but I continue to be "aware" that as the US economy is in "free-fall", as inflation strangles the dollar, it takes more and more to buy less and less???

Now having made these observations, I have been very pleased to see the progress and observe the initial sea quals of the carrier wing, it all went off without a hitch, and it has occurred at a pace that gives them the time to fly the missions, and then to assess where they want to "go" next, which has likely been scripted for quite some time. But make no mistake, this is all "expensive", and until at least one of the indigenous carriers puts to sea, the Liaoning is "precious metal", she is worth more "whole" and tied up at the dock, than attempting to "measure up" and having someone make a mistake that leaves her "wounded" and "hurt".

Wow...this thread is really crossing over between construction and PLAN Carrier News and Views.

Let's try and focus the conversation here purely on the construction of new carriers for the PLAN, and talk about operational issues for existing carriers on the other thread.

Sometimes kind of tough to do, I know...this thread is sort of like an adjunct to the other...almost the "next" PLAN Carrier News thread.

As to construction...I am intrested in finding further information/facts about the following:

1) Has construction at the yards actually begun?
2) Or, are they gathering the materials and sub-modules yet?
3) Was the news of this construction really an "official announcement" at all...or just based on "reliable sources"?

Thoughts?

Honestly, I feel The PLAN is going about their CV training at a snails pace. So slow in fact I have to wonder will they within 5 years get a CV up and fully operational? As Jeff has stated many times only time will tell. .

The first Soviet carrier Kiev took 8 month between completion in late 1975 and landing her first aircraft in july 1976. It took another 10 month before participation in the first fleet exercise in April 1977, and wasn't considered fully operational until August 1978. Almost 3 years before completion and full operational status. The deck operation of Kiev is arguable less sophisticated and certainly much less complex than would be required on the Liaoning. So the Chinese pace is by comparison not unusually slow for a country's first attempt at a carrier without substantial outside training assistance.

Every other power that operated carriers since WWII had received considerable direct training assistance from either the US or UK.

An interesting view...but they would have to rotate those crews (three of them) constantly through the Liaoning for the next 4-5 years while those carriers are building and outfitting in order to keep the crews well trained.

Such a training and rotation, IMHO, would possibly start a couple of years before the carriers are launched...but not five or more before.

Well, not exaclty.

That would mean that the crews are perhaps ready to hit the ground running. But the vessels themselves will still have to go through all of their paces. Every system will have to be checked. Every problem will have to be addressed.

Having a well trained and prepared crew is a great advantage...but no matter how you dice it, once the vessel hits the water it is going to go through all of the following:

Day 1, Hit the water

- Launch the Vessel
- Outfitting the vessel with Weapons, Sensors, and equipment - Probably close to a year of this.
- Builder's Trials - The Builder testing and working on the vessel, addressing issues they discover - Another 3-6 months

Launch + 12-18 Monnths

- Handover ceremony
- Naval Acceptance Trials - The PLAN crew trialing and addressing issues. Another 6 months.
- Commissioning of the Vessel
- Workup Period - Training to a high degress of profiecieny, exercises, live fire - Another 6-12 months

Launch + 24-36 Monnths

Full Operational Capability

With a well trained crew, you probably will hit the lower end of that time frame...but it will take that much time to ensure the vessel is fit, that all the logisitics are in place and working, that a full airwing is worked up, etc.

Thanks Jeff
I was using a little artistic licence on that one.
As you say it was more to ensure that a capable crew is ready when the ships are launched and that it is easier to find alternative uses for trained crew rather than for an empty ship.

Sorry being nagged so need to sign off!!

No problems. Understood completley.

Where I was raised in Texas, we have an old saying. It goes like this:

"If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!"

I've always tried my best to keep momma happy...but then, hehehe, figuring out what her difinition of "happy," is becomes the hard part. LOL!

MAJOR NEWS

Admiral Yin Zhuo has claimed that by 2020 China will have 3-6 amphibious assault groups consisting the new class of LHA, each of which can carry 1000 marines and weapons some 7000 to 8000 kilometers away, and will be accompanied by carrier battle groups.

However, a newer report suggests...

1. The "large" LHA design has been rejected by the General Armaments Department

2. The PLAN is going for the 30k ton displacement design instead, which can carry 26 helicopters

3. Construction and design of the LHA is being fast tracked

4. Improved Type 071 will be built next year

5. Improved Type 072 will be built also next year

Why do I get the feeling that this is a shot off the bow against Japan for the christening of the Izumo...

I suppose we will have confirmation of all this by this time next year.

But Y Zhou tends to be a bit on huge jumpy side of things... Even if he is a "rear admiral" of the navy.

One wonders why they want an improved 072...

I don't remember a media darling from the PLA who isn't an unabashed and inflammatory (ultra) nationalist.
