PLAN Anti-ship/surface missiles

When we learned YJ-20/21 was launched from the 9m UVLS a few years ago, I thought it was already considered a generally accepted consensus that 052D would also be able to be equipped with it, given it also has some 9m UVLS.

There is also software & electronics integration to consider.

Yes, in the sense that any new weapon for any complete platform needs to be "integrated" to each class/category/"baseline".

But given this is an offensive weapon and the kill chain is fairly platform agnostic and generally distributed in this age, it's rather different to whether a ship's software and battle management can say, manage BMD for example.

Any more info about HHQ-9 SAM upgrade or variants over its lifetime?
USA ships are pack with so many different SAM(SM-6, SM-3, ESSM) but PLA mainly uses HHQ-9 and some TOR on the frigates, I wonder if China made any different HHQ-9 variants for different specialty.

Nothing you wrote here about PLAN frigates is correct, but yes, the PLAN has constantly upgraded its SAMs over their lifetimes.

Sorry, to clarify what I meant, is that PLAN mainly use HHQ-9 and for the frigates they use TOR(which I misremembered, they are actually using HQ-16 which is a Buk derivative)

Yes, I am aware they upgrade it but any more information besides A and B variants? What are the actual upgrades? Did they make different variants for different targets like USN?

Not sure whether if any of the variants can be carried by navy ships, but there are several Chinese SAMs based off the HQ-9 with different roles, some of which are more specialized for BMD (ie HQ-19, comparable to SM-3/THAAD in role).

I just find it odd that there are so many discussions and interests regarding PLAN's anti ship/surface missiles, radars and sensors(the big GAN debate), engines and many other but barely anything for HHQ-9 which is such an important aspect of modern naval warfare.

I asked and looked around and the only thing which people can definitively say that there's A and B variants but barely anything more. There's little to no speculations or rumors to even go about it.

Yea, I saw the new ABM missile HQ-19 in the other threads, but seems that that it won't be launched from ships in the near future which is understandable as USN isnt close to be deploying or intending to deploy AshBM

I think it's a combination of PLAN being overly sensitive concerning information about naval missile systems combined with the fact it's a lot more difficult to get photos of something inside a VLS tube than something out in the open. This is equally true for all VLS missiles used by PLAN, not just HQ-9 or SAMs.
