Why were those sailors in some sort of uniform? I was under the impression that the Zhenhua 4 was privately owned and operated, Does China has an organization like the US Merchant Marine?

Here's something posted over at CDF that says a foreign submarine was shadowing the Chinese navy on patrol and was forced(?) to surface. I can't read it so maybe someone can give details.

Finn I believe those uniforms were just for the "show" of arriving back home. No more no less. The uniforms don't exactly fit and look at those shoes. They all appear to be new.

I believe the ship is under an enterprise owned by the government. The Zhenhuas are a special class of ship and they're more than a dozen of them apparently. Their main purpose is transfer cranes---yes, cranes---which sit on top of the deck. That gives them their strange look like a mega sized replenishment ship. The Zhenhua 4 in particular has a DWT of around 64,000 or so I heard.

It says the sub is like 70 metes in length, or more like approaching 70 meters. There is like a whole bunch of diesel subs that are under 70 meters in length, ranging from the Kilos to the Type 209s.

I was wondering if the families of the depolyed sailors were able to contact their loved ones. Apparently yes!:)

Do PLAN sailors have access to email while deployed?

Thank you!..

I have to wonder will those PLAN "soldiers" get any liberty(shore leave) while deployed?? :confused:And I know the Chinese sailors are escorted around by a political officer while on any shore leave.

From first hand experience after about a month at sea a sailor needs some liberty. It's not good to keep men in such small quarters for long periods of time. People get "testy".Especially young men.. The most consecutive days I ever spent at sea was 78 on board CV-66 in 1981.

It might be Indian, but the Indians probably have better things to do. I'll believe the story when I hear about it straight from the involved parties.
