China has IEP tech ready for 054 sized ships, rumored to be 054B. Maybe it's already under construction.
Scale it up and it can be applied to 055. But timing is not right for the first batch. Likely second batch together with rail gun.

Scale it further up it can be applied to carriers. Timing is not right for 001A or 002, more likely for the first nuclear powered one, with EMCAT. it may sound risky, but by that time china would have four carriers already and unless Chinese leadership is really paranoid she can take the time to test, design and build it properly. Plus many of the electric related stuff would have been well validated on 055.

Personally I'd like to see conventional powered EMCAT on 002, and I think it's technically possible. But the timing is not exactly right and I doubt China's planners have this kind of appetite.

I think both 001 and 002 would have been designed and built to be easily convertible to CATS once the technology becomes mature enough.

In that respect, I think they would have taken a leaf out of the UK QEII class, which was designed and built with a removable ski jump, catapult channels and internal spaces set aside for all the back end equipment.

001 will almost certainly look a lot like the Liaoning, but 002 might be a more radical design more like the UK QEII class.

Both will likely start with ski jumps, but get upgraded with CATs.

That's not the new Chinese carrier. Lots of clues why not, including that there was no ship under construction next to it.

PS post is related to #4981 !
