I don't believe it will take Chine "years and years" to form Liaoning airwing. Give it 2 more years the most they will do it . Let see they produce 10 J 15 last year and Now they start training the second batch pilots . Seem to me the production of J 15 is in lock steps with the the training of the pilots. This year they will produce 10 more J 15 and Start with training of the 3rd batch pilots on the carrier. Now that qualification of equipment and system behind them . The crew training and operation procedure more or less done by now . Whatever retrofit needed to improve the system. Done. Home port and logistic support Done. So now they can concentrate on forming the air wing. As the report clearly stated the training and qualification of pilot will be accelerated We know they have roster of 30 pilots training on land facility right now . China has confounded the skeptic again and again!

Honestly I thought Liaoning was fitted with modern Chinese Gas turbines
Me too. The ship is not even commissioned yet and it's running on 30 yr old Russian engines. As much as PLAN gutted the entire ship they must have figured it wasn't necessary to put new engines in there but I imagine the new equipment, sensors etc would require a lot more power than Varyag ever did.
I'm not sure if the guy is implying liaoning still has the same ones or that it sailed to china with them on board but have since been replaced. If the former than it would be dissappointing news indeed.

If the engines needed only a minimal amount of work to get operational, that saves time and money for other work on the ship, so making best use of what's already present shouldn't be viewed as a negative.
