As far as those who are quite familiar with the PLA-N, their ships do not go on "vacation". The Carrier may be doing some preparations/sprucing up for the impending PLA-N Fleet Review.

I am pleased that Sec Def Hagel has taken the time to "shore-up" Sino-US relations at a time when so much is at stake. The US relationship with China is a far different animal than US-Russian relations, as China and the US have become very important trading partners, and we are joined at our economies, while many of our views are potentially conflicting, far more are parallel, I think it would be a huge mistake by either country to discount the other. I think this visit is a sign that there is an awareness of how important this relationship is to both our countries. I think this new openness, is fragile, but prescious to both our peoples, although there are "buzzards" on both sides who would like to engender strife, and we each have other "friends" who would prefer that we remain at odds, I would encourage honest and up-front communications, so we all know where we stand with one another....... really, conflict would tear the world apart. I am absolutely not encouraging a relationship at any cost, but an honest, open, friendly, and respectful partnership...

I think the biggest difference is unlike US-Russia relations, the US-Sino relations are not based on MAD doctrine and constant threat of Armegeddon. Things are far easier to resolve when either parties are not in the habit of calling for the total annihilation of hundreds of millions of her citizens.

True. We should get rid of nuclear weapons altogether as written in the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Chinese have been very open and straightforward during Hagel's tour.

Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Fan Chang Long openly told Hagel in front of reporters that "What he said in SEA and Japan has been very hard, and that the Chinese people including himself are not pleased." and that "US has been reiterating that she will keep neutral in conflicts between Japan&China but his words in Japan don't reflect this".

Chuck Hagel is just doing what politicians do..spin a tale to suit his needs and those in charge of him.

The Chinese have been very open and straightforward during Hagel's tour.

Ture..to a point. However... Why were not reporters and photographers allowed aboard CV-16 during SecDef. Hagle's visit to the ship?..What's the big secret?

In contrast the USN has allowed may foreign visitors aboard it's carriers. Including the Chinese.

Idealistically, I wholeheartedly support that notion.

Realistically, nuclear weapons is a Pandora's Box. It's just not going to happen, and we need to learn to live with that.

The big secret is: how much have the chinese advance in terms of aircraft carriers knowledge? the chinese must fear that those journalists could have noticed/spotted something that they dont want to reveal.

yes, the US has already been there and knows much more than china, but the US would surely like to know how much have they advanced. Thats why the whole USS cowpens incident.
