It should say something that none of these articles have any consistent information except a plane crashed. Sorry to tell those that smell of troll, this isn't a crippling blow like you'd wish. Like recent history has shown, the Western media isn't a reliable source especially when it comes to military intelligence. Also if the Times article posted here had any truth to it, how can this be a huge setback if the technology was stolen in the first place? It's not like the inventor was killed in the crash along with all his knowledge. Maybe an engineer on the plane had the only copy of the stolen blue prints in his pocket. It sounds like the crash had nothing to do with the AEW technology itself so why would that be a setback in China's AEW program? China will just build another.

I don't understand why people keep on bringing KJ-2000 into this. It's not KJ-2000, it's one of the Y-8 platforms. That's why it happened in Anhui. That's why the engineers that died are from lab 38.

Just a side note though, although Y-8 may not be the best platform for all the surveillence aircrafts, it does show the urgency of the Y-9 program, which is designed specifically for such purpose. I would expect the Y-9 program to be far safer of a all-purpose platform.

You are right. primer color on crashed plane (which is yellow) confirms it. Y8 balance beam was in this color while testing.

KJ-2000 are not painted in yellow.

NANJING, June 15 (Xinhua) -- A funeral ceremony was held in the barracks of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in Jiangsu Province, east China, Thursday, in memory of people killed in a military plane crash on June 3.

Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Chinese president, and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), sent a floral wreath to the ceremony.

The transport aircraft crashed in East China's Anhui Province on June 3, killing all the 40 people on board. Air Force sources said that the aircraft was on a mission when it crashed, according to previous reports.

No details were available about the mission, the exact locationof the crash or the identities of the victims.

CMC vice chairmen Guo Boxiong, Cao Gangchuan and Xu Caihou, andCMC members Liang Guanglie, Li Jinai, Liao Xilong, Chen Bingde, Qiao Qingchen, Zhang Dingfa and Jing Zhiyuan also presented their floral wreathes to the memorial service.

When delivering an address at the funeral service, Guo Boxiong called the deaths of the victims in the June 3 air crash a major loss for the modernization of the Air Force and an enormous mishap for their families.

According to Guo, chairman Hu has paid great attention to the accident and the families of the victims. He gave an instruction immediately after he received a report on the crash, ordering to probe into the cause and properly handle the follow-up issues.

On June 4, chairman Hu expressed deep condolences over the death of the people in a message to the families of the victims, according to Guo.

Guo said that the victims, who had carried out their sacred mission endorsed by the Party and the people, showed their absolute faith to the Party, love to the motherland and the people, and endless pursuit for the modernization of national defense and the military force.

He said that the victims had made outstanding contributions with painstaking efforts to the building up of a powerful Air Force.

"They had composed a brave song of patriotism and heroism with their lives," he said, "Their contribution will be inscribed in the hearts of their compatriots and their heroic names will stay alive together with mountains and rivers."

Guo called for learning from the victims for their lofty thinking of loving the Party and the country and being devoted to national defense, their revolutionary spirits of working hard and fulfilling their duties, their scientific, truth-seeking, and meticulous work style, and their fighting style of braving all hardships and struggling hard.

According to Guo, the PLA headquarters and the Air Force headquarters sent investigation teams to the site immediately after the wreck of the Air Force transport plane. The investigators combed the area to look into the cause of the accident, with the assistance from troops of PLA' Nanjing Area Command, the Chinese People's Armed Police, and local Party committee, government and people.

Guo thanked the family members of the victims for their giving priority to the interests of the Party and the country and helpingthe authorities to handle the follow-up issues. "They have stood to their sense in a very lofty manner," he noted.

He continued that the Air Force is a strategic power to support the security and development of the country, and it shoulders an arduous task in carrying the PLA's historical mission in the new century. "The CPC central committee, the CMC and chairman Hu have attached great importance to the construction of the Air Force," he said.

He noted that the country will continue to push the modernization of the Air Force with an active manner, while the PLA must perform its duties in a scientific way to ensure the safety and stability of the troops.

Li Jinai read Hu's message to the victims' families at the funeral, which was presided over by Qiao Qingchen, commander of the Air Force. Deng Changyou, commissar of the Air Force, read the lament.

Floral wreaths were also presented by the CMC, PLA headquarters, Party committee of the Air Force, PLA's Nanjing Area Command, as well as the general office of the CMC, provincial Party committees and governments of Anhui and Jiangsu.

Representatives from the military headquarters and local governments as well as victims' families attended the ceremony. Enditem

In 1998 or 1999 an Indian indigenous AEW&C had also crashed while it was on a test-flight. The 8 scientists on board were killed. Since then the program has been in abeyance.
It may thus be possible that due to this incident, the Chinese AWAC proram may also be delayed for an indefinite period.

This crash is not going freeze or stop anything. I guess it would be a huge blow if you're driven by ego and just lost billions because of it. But China has real potential adversaries that are driven by ego. China needs AEW and China will continue the program. The only thing that'll stop it is if the AEW technology doesn't work and this crash says nothing about the technology itself. Interesting choice of words used to describe those that died. First of all, flowery words of importance are not unusual at memorials but for the government to tell the world that it's a blow to China's modernization of its military is suspicious. Is it the truth or did someone in the government didn't want to pass up an opportunity to play down China's military modernization which has been its message to the world in the first place? Afterall, the world media with all the inaccurate "facts" in regards to this accident already and history of unreliable information reported wishfully concluded it as a blow from the very beginning. Why not take advantage?

Excellent analysis. I love how the mainstream western media always has the following catchphrases in reference to the PLA.

"obsolete," "struggling with technology," "world war II era"

The fact is that the crashed airplane is just one of many Y-8 AEW variations, and the Y-8 variations are not the "high end" AWACS like the KJ-2000 (with the mainstay platform). At this point, it doesn't appear as if the cause of the crash had anything to do with the electronics or radar: it's could just be a structural problem with the Y-8 platform.

The deaths of 40 comrades is setback, but it's not really even a serious setback.
