The officer in question is a Lieutenant Colonel, how did he end up being the brigade commander? Mass casualties in the command staff?

Here is a 2010 documentary, Battle of Zhurihe, that walks through a Zhurihe exercise from 2008. With usual CCTV dramatization

Here is the part 2 and 3 of the documentary. Basically Red if tasked to a blue position that had a high ground to its side. While Blue has to hold their position as well as the high ground.

Red tried a two prong attack, and a cordinated air drop to the rear of the blue position. However the airborne force was surrounded and destroyed. (so far I have not seen a single successful air assault by the red force at Zhurihe.) The left prong was ambushed after it worked its way across a mine field, and got stuck. The right prong was able to take the high ground after considerable cost, but unable to advance to the blue position.
