If he has to tie it down as such, the attachment currently used by the QBZ95-1 really sucks.
But we've seen other type95-1s using optics just fine. Usually they mount the pic rail to the proprietary mount and the optic to the pic rail. As a result, it might become pretty tall, therefore we see cheek weld being added to some of them. I don't know what's the deal with the rubberband, but it's not a representative case

It could be an issue with the optic or a QBZ95-I that was damaged in some way.
A potentially new medium magnification (maybe 4x or so) rifle combat optic being issued? I have never seen this one before. It doesn't look like the normal, thin ones issued to the QBZ 95 family that I have seen. Looks a lot more "western" than the optics issued in the past. The screen grabs aren't great so I've included a few to get a better view.

In fact, the optic looks similar to the one pictured on the supposed "new" rifle.
