Not the best source, but allegedly it dates back to a cancelled rifle program in ~ 2014 ?

That short barrel is going to reduce the lethality of the 5.8mm rounds, making the latter incapable of yawing and fragmenting in enemy soldiers' tissues.
Clearly not. Current AK12 looks like a slightly modified AK74M with M4 style stock. Is that an "AK-12" "Variant"?
No too this is an older prototype"No". "It is a supposed new service rifle being developed for the PLA" "." ""
which would be a violation of the Hague convention. That short barrel is going to reduce the lethality of the 5.8mm rounds, making the latter incapable of yawing and fragmenting in enemy soldiers' tissues.
Seems like the PLA wants to follow the M4 path, but the US Marines ultimately decided to field the longer (and heavier) barreled M27.Clearly not. Current AK12 looks like a slightly modified AK74M with M4 style stock.

Expanding bullets have generally been considered a No No in International warfare. Classified as Dum dum or bursting bullets the convention forbids use of ammunition but the military that expands, bursts, flattens or tumbles easily so as to result in a increased wounds or shock effect.
If the effect is a secondary IE not intended to occur or occur only under certain circumstance then it gets a bit of a pass.
Generally speaking, PLA ammo I have heard of places the emphasis has been on barrier penitration and potential AP. Shorter barrel would reduce that effect. However the trade off is that the longer barrel conventional rifle is a little more awkward to carry or deploy in urban fighting or from the confines of a vehicle. This has resulted in the popularity of Folding stocks, Telescoping stocks, shorter barrels or Bullpup rifles. Each addresses these issues with their own trade offs. Folding stocks tend to result in more recoil, Telescoping stocks like the M4 have better recoil but others like MP5 offer no check weld or recoil reduction both like folders need to be deployed on entry to the field. Short barrels trade off velocity and tend to result in issues of increased rate of fire causing wear on the rifle. Bullpup rifles have the longer barrel in the shorter package but have issues of ergonomics and increased mechanical malfunction issues.
I wonder if the full-sized assault rifle would maintain the QBZ-95's 460mm (18.1 inch) barrel, which would be necessary for the 5.8mm ammo to travel more than 3000fps (915mps).Obviously there will be a carbine variant as well as a full size assault rifle variant.

The USMC M27 is longer than M4 yes but shorter than the M16A4 They were using as there standard issue rifle.Seems like the PLA wants to follow the M4 path, but the US Marines ultimately decided to field the longer (and heavier) barreled M27.
That's probably just a pump action and the tube below the barrel is the magazine tube, like a shotgun.Does anyone have information regarding this strange-looking grenade launcher? It appears to have two barrels and a very large buttstock, so the kickback must be considerable.
