Of course you can. The SCAR-16/17 is a perfect example (I personally own two 17s). The gas piston is separated from the bolt carrier by 0.02" of space at rest and does not contact the bolt carrier until the bullet has already left the barrel.You can't have a true free-floating barrel in a gas-operated automatic weapon.
