Considering how much these things cost and how much your average PLA trooper earns, I find it very hard to believe one of them would have bought that for laughs, and I doubt his CO would allow him to use it even if he did buy it. Certainly not in front of the TV cameras anyways.
The PLA probably bought a small number number of such systems for testing and evaluation and sent them out to select units.
I don't think the PLA would turn their nose up at something just because it was made by the private sector. If a private operation came up with an amazing piece of kit for a reasonable price, you can bet the PLA would snap it up (the company as well most likely). Thus it would be unwise not to buy some samples of what is available in case they missed something really useful.
