PLA Small arms

I think they aren't regular PLA army, and there are at least two different types of rifles mixing in a training. The type 03 is an assault rifle while the QBU-88 is a marksmanship one which should not train together. Since the instructor was walking in front of them, I believe their rifles are empty. This is not in the U.S, so it's normal that their empty rifles don't have any special mark.

Edit: I clicked the link and photo number 6 proves that their rifles are actual empty (no magazine). Even the photo above, if you look carefully, the type 03 has no magazine.

yeah the QBZ03 visibly is missing its magazine. Also look at what the "Instructor" is doing. I think he is making a adjustment to the front sight of a rifle.
I am not to sure on the sights of the QBZ series but AK front sights pretty much demand C clamp vice to adjust for windage well the rear was for range only. M16 development varies on this In early models but after M16A2 all irons adjustments were at the rear sight. Given no magazines but in a shooter line I guess this is sighting in for marksmanship training.

Yeah the mixing, the bad trigger discipline and the fact that they are so close together.. Lol
I'm glad it's not live fire then so I retract part of my statement however life rounds or not the training regimen still is sloppy for the reasons both you and I have observed.

I don't like to criticize but those pictures tells a lot... And not in a good way!
Are these really PLA regulars? Or just kids out of boot camp? Same with the instructor walking in front in a life fire exercise.
Those are PAP Border Patrol unit, as they're the only outfit that get issued with the Type 03 (PLA regular formations issued with QBZ-95 series); this is probably to train / refresher course on shooting postures, so their weapons aren't loaded.

I am sure PLA regulars use the Type 03 as well, maybe the paras?

The PLA is very big on laying good foundations in their training.

One of the basic exercises they love to do is to get their troops to hold their weapons absolutely still in shooting positions over extended periods (up to several hours at a time).

To ensure the weapons don't drift, the instructors would balance a round on the barrel of each gun, so if the barrel wonders, the round drops to the ground and the recruit would have failed that exercise.

This could be a basic version of that exercise, where the recruits are just being taught the correct postures they need to hold.

If they were anywhere close to line troop standards, I would expect them to be holding their weapons crouched or even standing, not in the easy prone position with bipod assist.

In addition, PLA regulars always displace good trigger discipline, so that is an immediate give away that these are not out of boot camp.

There is pics what show PLA support units carrying Type-03. Paratroopers use it for sure.

Yup, the para-trooper uses the Type-03 as the video mentioned. They use it because of the compactness (after folding the stock) comparing to a type 95
